Why reinvent the wheel when you can learn from the technology work that other schools are doing? Alberta education shares reports and recommendations about the latest technology initiatives in their schools. Download PDF reports and how-to's on implementing iPads, One to One devices in the classroom, managing Bring Your Own Device initiatives, and many "geekier" topics that go beyond what classroom teachers need to know but will be helpful for instructional technology coaches or teachers serving on school technology committees. This site is definitely for the tech evangelists in your school. As schools face constant changes in technology, Alberta is sharing how their schools manage such changes.
In the Classroom
Expand your professional knowledge of new and upcoming technologies and how schools are using them. Share these resources with your school technology leadership as they plan for new initiatives. This site is primarily for district level policy makers and edtech folks, but teachers will find useful nuggets of best classroom practices within some of the PDF reports. For example, the report on Bring Your Own Devices (BYODs), Section 4, is about how to use BYODS for lessons on digital citizenship and another (Section 5) with scenarios of lessons/units with students using their own device. Use the table of contents in each report to find the classroom implementation examples and best practices. If you are in a graduate program, you will find interesting edtech research within these reports, perhaps suggesting a research topic you would like to pursue as part of your grad program.

Almanack uses AI (artificial intelligence) to generate lesson plans and materials for educators. Create an account to begin using Almanack and access your account dashboard. Select the Resources link to choose from options to create a resource. Options include assessments, group activities, slide decks, and additional activities. After selecting one of the tools, follow the prompts to add course information, learning objectives, and outcomes. Export materials created by Almanack to Google Docs, PowerPoint, or Google Slides and edit as needed, depending on the type of tool made. Use the Courses link to develop lessons and units using Almanack's suggestions or add information manually.
In the Classroom
Use Almanack to quickly create classroom slide presentations, worksheets, and learning activities. Quickly create materials to differentiate instruction using the same topic but adjusting for different grade levels to meet students' abilities. A straightforward way to learn how to use Almanack is by beginning with the resources section. For example, start with video recommendations to find YouTube videos to include with your lessons. Along is an online tool for providing digital check-ins and reflection activities with students using audio, video, or text. Share a question with some or all students to encourage making connections and check in on student wellness. Students select an option to share their responses, and the teacher views reflections within the Along dashboard. Follow up with students as desired to continue the conversation or to make personal connections with all students. Use the tips and content provided by Along to select research-based questions designed to help students build life skills and confidence. Teachers with students under 13 years of age will need to send home a letter of consent, which Along has provided in Spanish and English and for print or to email. There is also a code of conduct which all students must agree to. To find this information and the forms - from the home page scroll down to and click Code of Conduct from the bottom menu.
In the Classroom
Along makes it easy for you to implement this tool into your classroom with their many free resources. Resources include guides to introducing Along to students and fellow educators. Share the privacy information guide with parents as you begin using this tool. Begin by using the customizable calendar as a method for planning to introduce and use Along. Consider using the information found on the site to create and share a presentation about this product using Google Slides, reviewed here, or by creating a short video using Adobe Creative Cloud Express Video Maker reviewed here. Be sure to show students how to prepare for their responses. If you find some students are reluctant to use one of the modes, for instance, the video, work with that student to help them feel comfortable. Uses for this tool are only limited by your imagination, and it's perfect for staying updated on the social-emotional learning (SEL) of your students. Check-in with students during long projects or reports to see where they are in the process and if they have any frustrations, check-in after a science lab to see who has questions, ask students at the end of a project or lab what they would do differently next time. Check-in with Language arts book groups to see how students are doing with the novel, their group, the project at the end, etc.

This 5 minute YouTube video provides a simple explanation of autism created for parents and teachers to share with students. Simple animations demonstrate how the brains of autistic persons receive information differently. The video also offers simple tips for supporting those with autism. The video is hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then it may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Share this short video with your class as part of any discussions on autism. Stop the video at different points along the way to discuss the information and develop knowledge of how to understand and work with autistic students. Consider enhancing classroom technology use and giving all students a chance to voice their opinions (even the shy and quiet ones) by using a tool like Yo!Teach, reviewed here. Backchannel Chat is an easy tool to manage if you are starting the process of integrating technology into your classroom. If you and your students are more advanced with technology, you may want to modify technology use in your classroom with a tool such as Acclaim, reviewed here, where you AND your students can annotate, highlight, and ask questions or make observations about the content of the video. This video is also perfect for use during staff meetings as an introduction to considering tools and guidelines for working with autistic students. This animation tool will help create a video or a video slideshow with pizzazz. Add personal sounds, videos, and other media to create the next level of video for your classes. This tool is great for schools without access to other free video or multimedia creation software. Create 30 second videos including music choices from over 50 soundtracks. A typical thirty second video requires twelve images making this a reasonable choice for projects with middle and high school level students. Also look through their many templates making this video creator easy to use for anyone.
Students ages 13+ can set up their own Animoto account if they have a school email, but their account won't be connected to your teacher account, therefore, they will need to email you their completed video links. A better solution for some teachers may be to consider using a "class set" of Gmail subaccounts, explained here; this tells how to configure Gmail subaccounts to use for any online membership service. Using Gmail subaccounts will provide anonymous interaction within your class. You will also recieve emails from Animoto when videos are completed and passwords are changed. You can also use the Gmail subaccounts for students under 13, with appropriate parent permission. See this

In the Classroom
Demonstrate how to sign up for Animoto and how to use it to students on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Students need the basic understanding of how to upload pictures, videos, and other media, especially a student adding personalized content. Use stock images and media available through the site if you prefer. Once you are registered, simply click on the create button and follow the onscreen instructions. If adding personal images and video, the program allows searching through your computer files. Add music from the site bank or from personal music sources (copyright-free, of course). Finalize the video with the last click and view your video. Share easily from the codes or export tools provided. Use Animoto to make commercials, science fair previews, and animated shorts in any content area. Have students make "advertisements" for an organism or a literary character. Make a travel commercial for a country being studied or for cultural sites in a world language class. Be sure to share the presentations on your projector or interactive whiteboard.Edge Features:

Responses are posted in order of ratings. Email registration is required to post and answer questions. An optional poll can be added to each question. Share questions using links to email share, Facebook, Twitter, and many other share tools. Warning: if you are using questions from their database, be aware, questions may update frequently so it is a good idea to take a look immediately before sharing in front of young people.

Post a question as a homework assignment for student response using a specific url directly to that question. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create their own questions. The final chapter consists of a series of recommendations based on two guiding questions in the document: What is our collective vision of a desirable and achievable educational system that leverages automation while protecting and centering human agency? On what timeline will we be ready with the necessary guidelines and guardrails along with convincing evidence of positive impacts so that we can ethically and equitably implement this vision widely?

This downloadable booklet provided by the Department of Education shares guidance on understanding how to use AI to advance educational goals while also evaluating and limiting the risks involved with using AI. Choose from two download options - download the seventy-one-page report or choose the Core Messages link to view a four-page summary of crucial information from the report.

Understanding how AI works and the pros and cons of using AI tools in education is a crucial skill for all educators. Use the information in the booklet as a starting point for understanding AI and how it impacts your teaching. Share the booklet with your peers to use during ongoing professional development sessions, and include this information with your other AI resources. Enjoy science explained musically through clever songs. Discover weekly additions of cleverly written and illustrated songs on topics such as the Periodic Table, How Your Brain Works, 8 Sick Remedies That Actually Work, and more. Each video explains the science behind a surprising fact or the scientific answer to a question like "Can you really be scared to death?" The New Periodic Table song is a must-see. Find it by browsing through the Popular section. Note that this channel is intended for the general, adult public, so some topics (such as sex) are for mature audiences! If your district blocks YouTube, videos may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Mark this one in your teacher favorites to find videos to use at the start of a science or health unit. Make science more appealing as a way to answer the questions we ponder every day. Do NOT turn students loose on this channel. Because of the popular "adult" videos on this channel -- not appropriate for the classroom, but perfectly appropriate for adults -- we recommend locating the specific video you want to share and placing the url or embed code for that one video on your class web page or wiki. You can also share on a projector or interactive whiteboard. To avoid any possibility of showing titles that may cause distraction, use a tool such as ViewPure, reviewed here to clear away all the YouTube clutter. Use an ASAP Science video as inspiration for students to create their own videos explaining a science concept or debunking a science myth. Other inquiries will receive a response within 5 days. Be sure to read the Reference Correspondence Policy at the bottom of the home page for directives on how this resource should be used. This is an "adult" reference tool, not a student's homework assistance hotline!
