What is Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how is it related to machine learning? How does generative AI leverage the power of large language learning (and what is large language learning?)? Find the answers to these questions and more with this informative article that breaks down some of the common buzzwords used to gain an understanding of AI and its impact on society. Each of the ten terms is explained in everyday language including short explanations and examples of the content discussed.

In the Classroom

Use this article to develop your understanding of AI and related terms. Share the information with your peers as part of your professional development activities as you learn about AI tools, discuss guidelines for the use of AI by you and your students, and support your discussions of AI use with parents. Consider sharing this article on your class website to help parents learn about AI. As a school, dig deeper into developing an understanding of AI by choosing to explore one term in-depth each month. For example, begin with term number one, artificial intelligence, and start a conversation with what you, your peers, parents, or students know about AI. Use a word cloud creation tool like Answer Garden, reviewed here as an easy way to collect responses anonymously while still viewing responses in this visual format. Zapier helps you organize and manage your workflow between apps through automated tasks. Create an account and use the guide to find and choose apps you use. Zapier integrates with a multitude of apps, including Dropbox, Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, as well as many other online tools. Connect two or more apps to create an automated action. Choose to create a Zap to select an app and an event. For example, select your Gmail account and create a path to save all Gmail attachments to your Google Drive automatically. Be sure to check out the "Recommended for You" options for an overview of the many ways to organize the workflow between apps.

In the Classroom

Use Zapier to manage everyday online work. Have Zapier send you an email each time student blogs are updated, add documents automatically to your Google Drive as they arrive in your email, or get email reminders before upcoming calendar events. The variety of actions makes this a convenient tool for automating any number of activities to save you time and maintain the organization of your information.

Find ideas for using QR codes in the classroom. This slideshow is a must-see to get many unique ideas for using QR codes. Examples include adding QR codes to worksheets for students to check answers or to go to a video explanation for completing the worksheet. Another idea: print a QR code on a sticker and place into textbooks for students to access additional content. Add to displays or bulletin boards to make them interactive. There are many great ideas shared on this site. It is definitely worth a visit for anyone using or wanting to use QR codes in their classroom. Of course, you do need to have devices that can read the QR codes; smart phones and iTouches work well.

In the Classroom

Choose one of the ideas suggested in the slideshow as a starting point for using QR codes. Try additional ideas one at a time. Share the slideshow with other teachers and split up the ideas for each to become an "expert" in one of the strategies. Share your experiences as you learn together. Challenge your students to dream up other uses for the codes. As a service project, students could create a QR code school "tour" or add QR codes for students to use while waiting in the cafeteria line to access nutrition information about today's menu.

Share files hassle-free using Just Beam It! Drag your file into the designated space, share the URL link, and leave the WINDOW OPEN. You will get a message telling you the transfer completed. At this point, it is safe to close the window. If you prefer the traditional file search to find sharable documents, there is a spot to click for that method of file identification. Just Beam It! works by streaming the file directly from your computer to your recipient, and is not stored on the website. Just remember, files cannot exceed 2 GB and keep the window open until the transfer is complete. Beam happily!

In the Classroom

Have trouble sharing files with students because they do not have email? Do they need to share files with each other for collaborative projects ? Try using Just Beam It! No email or flash drive needed. File transfer is quick. Drag, drop and share! So easy, a savvy fourth grader could do it.

This helpful site supports learning about and using text sets in the classroom for all grades. Enroll in the free, self-paced course to learn about text set design and how to use text sets to build student knowledge and vocabulary in any subject. Visit the links at the top of the site to find downloadable text sets categorized by elementary, middle, and high school. Within each category, the text sets are then organized into grade levels. Download a planning guide with links to resources and activities for each text set offered. In addition, each set includes separate links to additional resources such as student work samples, KWL charts, and more. Remember to visit the Support for Struggling Readers section to access rubrics and ideas to teach text structure, language features, knowledge demands, and purpose/meaning.

In the Classroom

This site is worthy of inclusion in virtually all teachers' toolboxes. Use the text sets to support literature instruction using the resources provided. Find materials to differentiate learning for all students by browsing through the different grade-level offerings to find materials that meet the needs of students who need additional support and resources that challenge gifted learners. Scoop.it considers itself a free "publishing-by-curation" tool on the web. You create a Scoop topic and add articles and websites to the topic. People who view your Scoop see what you want them to see. This is a way to deliver subject focused articles and information to a specific audience. Scoops can be shared through social media or using a widget to embed on your website.

In the Classroom

Create Scoops for projects so that students have a one stop shop to research. Create a Scoop with information and sites for students to use as a study guide. This also gives you some control over the information to which your students are exposed. Have students sign up for their own free account. Students could use this as a working bibliography of the resources they use for research, posters, and presentations for all classes. Assign students to create a collection of online literature about a specific topic as an assignment. Have students use the "add your insight" text box to provide a mini review of the articles.

ClipChoose makes polls based on YouTube videos -- not your typical polling/survey site. Create an account with only your email and password. Enter a question, then enter the URLs of up to eight YouTube videos. Share your poll by url or via Twitter or Facebook. The rest is up to your audience to make choices. The total votes for each choice show under the video clip. Not sure you want to make your own poll? Browse the site for polls already created. Be sure to choose before sharing with young people. This is a public site and content isn't moderated. Currently all polls are public; however, private polls and more management features will be available soon. View an example poll created here in less than 10 minutes. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Challenge students to create their own polls then search for YouTube videos to support or explain each response. Create a ClipChoose poll as a teacher or whole class. Have students respond then write a response using quotes from videos to back up their choice. Administer a poll, then use the data for graphing practice. Display sample polls (made by you or the class) and data for practice with interpreting graphs. Collect parent or student opinions about any topic. Take a poll at back to school night to find out what parents' greatest concerns or misconceptions are. Obtain quick feedback from students about which curriculum topics are confusing them. Allow students to create polls as part of critical thinking exercises such as how poll wording may bias the results. Encourage students to include polls in oral presentations to increase audience engagement. Teach students about types of propaganda using up to 8 example videos in ClipChoose. Ask students to select the one that demonstrates the use of a particular propaganda technique.

The document includes chapters on ethics, a sense of AI, teaching and learning, formative assessment, and more. The final chapter consists of a series of recommendations based on two guiding questions in the document: What is our collective vision of a desirable and achievable educational system that leverages automation while protecting and centering human agency? On what timeline will we be ready with the necessary guidelines and guardrails along with convincing evidence of positive impacts so that we can ethically and equitably implement this vision widely?

aiEDU offers information, activities, and toolkits for students, educators, and parents to learn about and interact with AI tools and become AI literate. Visit "Learn" to try AI challenges such as "Can you design 10 ways to fool your phone's face recognition?" The "Teach AI" section includes an Introduction to AI curriculum for high school students, a project dashboard, and AI Snapshots featuring 180 5-minute teacher-led warmup activities for middle and high school students. Other offerings for educators include professional development sessions, printable AI toolkits, and an Educators' Newsletter.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the many offerings of aiEDU to develop a foundational knowledge of AI literacy and teach students how to interact productively and safely with AI tools. Many lessons and activities are available with options for teacher-led or independent student activities. Share these lessons with students to complete as independent learning projects or flipped lessons based on student interests. This free tool is an aggregation site for news, research, information, and opinion about learning and technology. Hover over the titles to read an abstract or click to be taken to the site. There are video clips, slideshows, articles, and more. Share easily with others through email, Facebook, Twitter, or other social media. Interested in a specific topic? Use the tags on the left to view an entire category of related information. The site operates "automatically" by following certain feeds and web news searches, so new items appear very often. Although the title is Spigot, it could seem like "Firehose"! The content seems appropriate for secondary classrooms, but you might want to preview just before you turn students loose to be sure.

In the Classroom

Use these articles to discuss the future of education and the use of technology both in high school and higher education. As students are the most important stakeholders in education, many of these articles are relevant to them and their future. Students will especially be interested in the Practice and Alt. Culture sections of this site. Discuss current events in your classroom and ask students to investigate an angle on technology and/or education for a persuasive writing piece or debate. Students have incredible insight into their own learning and technology use. Keep this link bookmarked on your classroom computer or linked to your blog, wiki, or class page. Use examples from this site to look for bias or editorial slant as part of an information literacy unit. Select articles for experience with informational texts.
