If your local library just can't help, try this online service that puts you in contact with Library of Congress research librarians. Live chats are available for some topics. Other inquiries will receive a response within 5 days. Be sure to read the Reference Correspondence Policy at the bottom of the home page for directives on how this resource should be used. This is an "adult" reference tool, not a student's homework assistance hotline!

In the Classroom

Have students use this as a resource while working on a research project. Just check with your school technology policies and make sure it's acceptable to use the live chat option.

The site presents each of these in some detail, with an eye toward giving science teachers the ability to develop model-based teaching approaches for other topics. This would be a great resource to use as a starting point for a professional inservice or a summer workshop.

This Rand study offers suggestions on effective survey design and administration techniques, the unique factors present in web and e-mail based surveys, and a look at the attractive speed with which researchers can develop and collect information using these technologies. For those who depend on accurate responses, this could be useful information.

National Runaway Safeline's tagline is "Keeping America's runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth safe and off the streets." Find important information for students, parents, counselors, and anyone else who works with young people who have run away (or might be thinking about doing so) and their families. In addition to location and confidential contact services, the site offers a wealth of resources for both families and young people. For teachers and counselors, there is an evidenced-based, interactive, 14-module curriculum "intended to educate young people about alternatives to running away as well as to build life skills... "Runaways are a quiet problem whose dimensions are far more significant than many realize. The site includes resources for homelessness, as well.

In the Classroom

Under the menu tab at the top labeled Prevention and Intervention, check out the "Let's Talk" free runaway prevention curriculum for lessons you can use for specific situations or concerns.

Administrators and those interested in training qualified teachers and deploying them where they're most needed will find this paper from Arizona State University intriguing. The authors advocate for a system similar to that which has been used to attract physicians and health care professionals to specific training programs and practice locations. Both the concept and the logic are interesting and well presented.

Its utility for the average teacher is largely dependent on specific circumstances, but it does consolidate a great deal of information into a single resource. There is also a very complete listing of state resources, and these may be more directly useful.

Edward Tufte is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the use of visual images to convey statistical and quantitative information. In this short article, he launches a salvo at the power of powerpoint to misrepresent, overcomplicate, or otherwise distort information and information flow. It's a bitter pill, but one that any teacher who uses this technology should take at least once.

Based at the University of North Carolina, this center offers information, strategies, and tools for educators who must meet the needs of students who are homeless. While much of the content is geared to those who are specifically responsible for working with these populations, there is a good deal of content for teachers as well. It's hard to access, however. We found the "site index" link the most efficient way to navigate.
