Nancy Keane has collected thousands of short (sometimes very short) book descriptions into an easily-accessed collection for use by elementary librarians and reading teachers. You will probably want to augment many of these if your book talks need to be more than a minute or two, but they can be a great starting point.

Here's a collection of outstanding books by Hispanic authors and/or about Hispanic themes for children and young people. Teachers and librarians may find this list helpful in selecting appropriate or attractive titles for their students. Click the title to see a description; most will have a classroom unit with reading levels and standards. Not only are the yearly winners listed here, but you can search by several categories such as Immigration, Civil Rights , Artists, Musicians, and Writers, various Latino countries, and several others. Clicking the category will produce a PDF you can take to the library or send home to parents.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free unit plans and classroom activities within the "resources" section of the page. Explore through these resources to find one to add a multicultural perspective to your history or language arts class. Be sure to save the site as a favorite to allow for easy reference later on. Though this page has been archived, and it is no longer updated, the links for the poems are still working. Poetry is a tough nut for the best of teachers. This British site offers engaging, highly visual presentations of poetry that will draw even the most poem-phobic students into the presentation. There are many options from which to choose, and the variety of presentation styles will help ensure that there is something for everyone. Language arts teachers will find this one well worth the effort. The audio requires Real Player, and a few activities require Shockwave.

In the Classroom

Use this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector as an introductory activity to poetry. Play one or more of the clips on the interactive whiteboard as a way to hook student interest. Have a class discussion or journal reflections afterwards for students to respond to the topic.

If you're searching for usable texts for a folklore or mythology unit, here's a ready resource. This listing draws from a wide range of sources, so some inconsistency in quality is inevitable. The breadth of selection, which includes tales from many different cultures, more than compensates.

In the Classroom

Use this site to find stories from all over the world during a lesson/unit on storytelling. Incorporating stories from different cultures can insure that these wont all be repeats for students, as well as adds a multicultural perspective. Peruse the site ahead of time to proof the stories and either print them or have students read that at different computer stations.

Mac owners will want to check out the "lite" version (free) of this downloadable program that makes study card stacks based on teacher or student notes. It's further evidence that the Mac, while now a "minority platform" retains a strong library of useful educational software.

In the Classroom

If your school uses MACs, you may want to get permission to load this software ( the free version) for students to create their own study cards, especially your learning support students who may be more motivated to study with such an electronic "aid."

This RIF lesson is an entire unit based on Louis Sachar's award-winning book Holes. The unit includes a Scholastice Study Guide, puzzles, as well as other worksheets in PDF format.

In the Classroom

Start with the Study Guide (download well ahead of time) and pick and choose what you want to use from the activities starting on page 58. Find ready to print puzzles and other activities by going back to the RIF page for Holes. To engage students and enhance learning ask students to make a summarizing comic every few chapters using Make Beliefs Comix, reviewed here. It would be best to work as a class for the first chapter you summarize and use Printable Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here, as a rough draft before creating the Make Beliefs Comix.

This site offers a nice on-line collection of many of the fairy tales that are a staple of preschoolers' lives. Teachers and parents will find these useful, but should note that archaic language of the late nineteenth century versions that appear here may prove troublesome. Still, this is a useful resource.

Looking for a fun site students will enjoy visiting? The many interactives on this page is for you. Teachers will get loads of great teaching ideas by viewing the site and students will be inspired to write and illustrate their own ideas about this well loved story. You can take quizzes, complete crossword puzzles, and more. The Book Trailer is hosted on YouTube, if your district blocks YouTube it may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

With older students you may want to introduce Charlotte's Web with the Book Trailer on your intreactive whiteboard or with a projector. Read aloud some of the other author's comments about the book. Include a link to games on classroom computers and your class website for students to access during learning centers or at home. Use Flip, reviewed here, to enhance student learning throughout your Charlotte's Web unit by asking what their favorite activity was and why or by asking clarifying questions (or both) and have students post video responses.

This site offered by Campbell Union School District presents students with lessons to write a fact based poem about a barnyard animal, a descriptive paragraph about barns, an opinion piece about spiders, and a persuasive letter for Fern. There are lots of web links and teachers will like the clearly written format and the Evaluation Criteria at the end of each lesson.
