Add this Kenn Nesbitt poetry site to your resource of kid-friendly poetry. This site is a treasure with podcasts, a rhyming dictionary, games, videos, tips and lessons for kid to write poetry. Browse through dozens of examples and choose a few to illustrate rhyme scheme, meter, or alliteration. These are not literary masterpieces, but they will engage your most resistant students, and perhaps inspire some original poetry. If your school blocks YouTube, the videos won't be viewable.

In the Classroom

Ask your students to choose a favorite poem from this site and use it as a model for their own poem. Have them pay attention to the rhythm and rhyme of the poem they like. Create a class book of poems using Book Creator, reviewed here.

Cartoon animation and narration combine to provide delightful renditions of beloved fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen and the Grimm Brothers.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on folk tales and short stories. This would be a great way to encourage ELL's and lower achieving readers to become interested in reading. Have students watch the stories on classroom computers, creating a timeline of the story, establishing the chain of events. This is a great way to get students thinking about timelines, and help those who are aided by the visual elements of the site. Make sure to include headphones so that students won't disturb others.

The Children's Television Network has created a delightful set of learning activities that strengthen skills in letter recognition, decoding, listening, problem-solving, and more. Led by the familiar cast of characters from Sesame Street, your youngest students will love to explore Elmo's World, the Game Room, and participate in interactive stories. The links include games, stories, art, music, mail, and Elmo's World. At the Games link you will find science activities about the weather, counting challenges, classification activities, musical fun, and numerous other educational activities. This site truly has something for all primary elementary classroom.

In the Classroom

Use this rare find to motivate your students. Have students work on individual computers and explore this site on their own. With younger students, you may want to introduce the site on an interactive whiteboard or projector. This is definitely one that you will want to share with your parents in your newsletter or on your class website.

Reinforce basic literacy skills through interactive activities that involve letter and numeral writing, word recognition, color, and shape. Early elementary students will enjoy the variety of games and activities that work best as supplements to offline instruction in the classroom or at home. Available in English, Spanish, French, and German.

In the Classroom

Though it may seem simplistic, this would make a really great resource for an ELL classroom or a basic Spanish, French or German class. Use the alphabet section as a learning center on classroom computers, allowing them to practice pronunciation and mimic what they are hearing on the site. This would be helpful for students who are auditory learners, and just need more practice with some of the basics. Make sure to include headphones on this site, insuring that students don't disturb others around them.

If you're looking for a resource that will engage reluctant readers or help new readers with unfamiliar vocabulary words, you may want to incorporate these fun and interactive stories into your classroom. Students can read through the interactive texts independently, click on troublesome words, and listen to their pronunciations. Select from movies, videos, and games that illustrate special sounds, pronunciations, and spelling rules.

In the Classroom

Use the movies to introduce the class to the alphabet. After working on letter sounds use the games and books during station time to reinforce letter sounds and spelling rules.

You will probably want to augment many of these if your book talks need to be more than a minute or two, but they can be a great starting point.
