Here are many questions that will stimulate in-depth discussions about E. L. Konigsburg's book. Some questions could provide a springboard for a student writing task and offers many opportunities for extensions such as role play and class presentation.
This site includes advertising.

In the Classroom

Challenge your students to a discussion using the ideas from Thinkalong, reviewed here. To help students prepare for the discussion, have them write about their opinion(s) for selected questions first. Replace paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their thoughts and understanding about the book. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, exchange paper and pen and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. After completing the discussions, challenge older students to choose a question and create a script for the ideas that emerged from the discussion; then strengthen student learning and have them put it into a podcast. Use a tool like Buzzsprout, reviewed here.

We've found a golden ticket! The Roald Dahl Story Company offers a colorful PDF that will enhance any classroom's reading of this cherished chocolate tale by Roald Dahl. We love the simple but well done literacy activities accompanied by illustrated by cartoon characters. Be sure to project them as you explain the lesson. Story questions, themes, and excerpts are organized by chapter. There is a list of materials and lesson plans for sale at the end, but this review is only for this free lesson plan.

In the Classroom

This site works really well with an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students can view the cartoon figures on the board and then review what to do on the handouts on the interactive board. The printables can be used by an entire class or for individual students. During times of remote or distance learning, put a link to this site on your class web page for parents and students to use at home, with directions for what you want them to do, of course. Then ask students to create a video response about what they learned using Flip, reviewed here.

Here's a site by Easy Fun School that is a very mini-unit. It has a brief Book Summary of Beverly Cleary' story , a paragraph About the Author with a few details, 9 vocabulary words suitable for 4th and 5th Grade students, and 5 questions that lack depth. Teachers may be able to use this site for information to share with younger students while the book is being read aloud in class, or as individual assignments for the older student who need a starting place for a book report. We wish there were more detailed classroom applications.

The site is set up as a page-by-page "read-along" that teachers could use with small groups of students. Early readers could also use the site on their own.

Legends and Myths can retell universal truths. Students can have fun learning that similar stories appear in many cultures. This Australian site has collected a number of legends and packaged them, nicely illustrated, in a single collection that's easy to browse. Upper elementary students can use these on their own, or try them as a read-along for primary students. Lots of good ideas here.

In the Classroom

Have students try out this site on individual computers, or as a learning center. By accessing the "Animal" section, and then "weird animal facts," the site provides some excellent class room openers to spur discussion! Did you know Tigers have striped skin, not just striped fur? Or that Penguins can jump 6 feet in the air? Students will definitely find these odd openers interesting, whether it be in a biology class or language arts!

Native American cultures offer wonderful examples of oral traditions and storytelling. This site from PBS provides examples of these, a look at some common story themes, and audio files with a number of different stories. Try using this one in a study of Native Americans or as part of a unit on stories from different cultures. Although this site is slightly dated, and some of the audio files are not updated, the content of this site remains relevant and useful to many classes; there is a lot of good information here.

In the Classroom

Use the educators guide to find ways to incorporate this site into your classroom, either through lesson plans or classroom activities. This would be a very useful site for a US history or English teacher, studying Native American Culture and story-telling.

The American Foundation for the Blind has created Braille Bug to explain Braille - what it is and how it works - to the sighted world. This site would be a great introduction for students who have family, friends, or classmates who are blind. There's a very complete introduction to the Braille alphabet, along with a printable Braille letter guide.

In the Classroom

This would also be a great stop in a study of disabilities and adaptive strategies.

An interdisciplinary unit for second graders dealing with "blue themes" in literature. The unit uses Blueberries for Sal, Jamberry, and several other books to build "blue" connections. This lesson plan was one of the winners in a lesson plan contest sponsored by TeachersFirst. TeachersFirst editors have added technology options where appropriate.

In the Classroom

This collection of "blue" activities gives teachers many choices. You may even want to invite some parents in to help with some of them, especially if students use the computer to create projects.
