Upschool provides many free learning opportunities aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The core of Upschool's content includes a selection of 10-week and short courses with topics such as The Solar System and Beyond and The Importance of Mountains. Additional learning opportunities include Social Scenarios, Comprehension Corner, SDG Challenges, and Teacher Training. Upschool also has a library of over one hundred books submitted by authors with a special message to share. Read the books online or download them as a PDF for free. Many of the books also include teaching resources such as task cards.
In the Classroom
Share Upschools 10-week and short courses with students to complete as individualized learning projects. Encourage gifted students to select courses that meet their interests and develop a personal learning plan based on the content. Each course includes accompanying materials for parents and teachers to support student learning. Use Whiteboard.chat, reviewed here as a collaboration tool for students while taking courses provided on the site. Create a board for each "cohort" to share ideas, ask questions, and add resources. After completing courses, ask students to share their learning through a method of their choosing. Examples might include podcasts shared using Spotify for Podcasters, reviewed here or videos created with Typito, reviewed here.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Plix (Play, Learn, Interact, and eXplore) shares over 1,000 interactives, providing practice and exploring math and science concepts. Math topics range from adding whole numbers to calculus concepts; science content includes biology, physics, earth, and life science, among others. Follow the directions found in each interactive to move the slider to show changes in each story problem or question. Plix integrates with several learning management systems, including Google Classroom, Schoology, and Canvas. Share Plix activities by creating a new class on the Plix site or assigning it to your learning management system.
In the Classroom
Use Plix interactives as warm-up activities when teaching new concepts, as a computer center activity, or as an exploration activity for homework. If you are not using a learning management system, use the three dots located on the top bar to find different share options and embed code to use on websites. After providing exploration time, ask students to share their understanding of the content in the using Padlet, reviewed here. This is a link to Padlet's Help section for posting video or an image. Pear Practice is a gamified learning experience that promotes collaborative learning and independent practice using tools provided by Pear Deck, reviewed here. Use Pear Practice to create learning experiences or choose from the large selection of activities in the practice sets. When creating a set, Pear Practice allows members to create multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, drawing, and drag-and-drop questions. Once a practice set is chosen, create an assignment for individual practice or start a live practice by choosing one of the game mode options. Options within live practice activities allow educators to set time limits for questions, allow guest students not in Pear Deck classrooms, and create random groups. Students join activities using the unique code or by sharing a link. When sharing as an assignment, specify a start and ending date and assign an accuracy goal for students to achieve. Students can retake the assignment as often as needed to meet the accuracy goal. Many activities in Pear Practice's public library correlate to Common Core Standards.
In the Classroom
Include Pear Practice as part of your ongoing practice and formative assessment activities. Browse the site's public library to find many activities for all grade levels and subjects, then edit questions to fit your needs. Use this feature to differentiate practice materials and games to accommodate the different needs of your students. Create sets that meet your specific needs as you become comfortable using Pear Practice. For example, generate practice sets for multilingual learners to learn vocabulary before beginning a new unit or make a set for students needing additional math facts practice. The Mind Map Generator quickly creates mindmaps from your prompt using artificial intelligence (AI) without requiring registration. Describe an idea or topic in the chat box, then click the arrow to continue. Information is produced in a flow chart that includes colored labels. The chart offers options to edit your mind map's style and content and look by clicking each card containing information. Additional features allow you to "ask AI" to add supplemental content such as maps and images. When finished, use the provided links to export your mind map to the web as a PNG file, generate a link for others to access and edit the information, and publish it as a web page.
In the Classroom
Although the interface for this mind map tool appears to be very simple, it offers many opportunities to create and share complex results. Begin by making simple mind maps such as themes found in novels your class reads or features of a state you study. After creating a mind map, ask this tool to build a visual story, for example, of the events leading up to the Civil War, then use the presentation feature to share and view with your students. As you become more familiar with the available features, modify the mind maps created to produce a personalized visual representation that fits your needs and includes links to additional information. Use the chat feature to make images and maps to supplement students' learning. Share mind maps you create as you begin a new unit as a helpful visual tool for students to understand the different components to recognize in your studies. Extend learning by developing a simple mind map of your topic and sharing it with students. Ask students to contribute information to the mind map that correlates to the information already included. Because this tool contains many features, it might be helpful to ask tech-savvy students to create video tutorials sharing how to use and modify the mind maps created. You'll learn how to enrich instruction by taking advantage of lesson plan ideas and explanations of how to integrate top-rated resources into your classroom. BBC Bitesize for Secondary is an extensive online resource designed specifically for secondary students. The site offers a wide range of learning materials for all subjects including, Mathematics, English, Science, Geography, History, and more. Each subject is broken down into manageable topics, featuring easy-to-understand notes, interactive activities, and quizzes to reinforce learning and test understanding. The site includes animations and graphics to explain complex concepts, particularly useful in subjects like Science and Math. Additionally, guides and articles offer study and revision tips, exam preparation strategies, and advice on coping with school-related stress. While this site is focused on UK studies, the content can easily be used by any country; just use the search feature to find content. Students can save content, which requires account creation. Please be mindful of your district's policy on student account creation before having students sign up. The videos on this site are only available if you reside in the UK, however there are interactives and a lot of content to help your students understand the concepts.
In the Classroom
Utilize the quizzes on BBC Bitesize as a fun and interactive way to assess students' understanding of a topic. These can be done individually or in groups. Project them on your whiteboard or take the questions and gamify them utilizing a program like Kahoot, reviewed here. Assign students to work in groups to explore a topic on BBC Bitesize and then create a presentation or project based on their learning. This is a good way to expose students to events happening in other countries. Use the site's resources to supplement your lessons in various subjects. For example, in a Science class, you could use their interactive content to explain a complex concept like photosynthesis or the periodic table. In Pieces is an interactive exhibition of 30 of the world's most interesting but unfortunately endangered species, portrayed through fragmented geometric art. Each species has a dedicated page with an animation and a brief, informative description highlighting its danger and the need for conservation. This artistic website aims to raise awareness about endangered species and illustrate how people can help with conservation. Each animal has statistics, a video, and a link to ways to help. The videos are housed in YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. Be sure to view the linked resources to ensure they are appropriate for your students.
In the Classroom
This resource would be great in art, math, or science. Download the images and have students use a drawing program to cut out shapes or use pattern blocks to replicate the downloaded image. Use this site in math class to enhance your statistics unit. The information is shown in various ways and provides students with a real-world connection on how statistics can be used to communicate information. Have students research a different endangered animal not shown and create a statistic presentation. In science, use this site to engage students in a unit on conservation. Have students view the site and record facts or statistics they found interesting. They could utilize a KWL to chart and record their thoughts. DiscoverWater.org is an interactive educational website dedicated to teaching children about the importance of water, its uses, and conservation strategies. It offers a variety of engaging activities, games, and learning modules to explore the science and management of water enjoyably. The site aims to inspire responsible water stewardship and increase awareness about the critical role water plays in our environment and daily lives. While there are informative videos on the site, they are YouTube videos. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Use this site to engage students as you introduce a unit on water conservation. Use the included assessments which can be found in the teacher resource section to give your students a pre or post-test. The website provides audio directions making it a good resource for use as a center. While the site allows students to create a take-action poster that can be printed, another option is to use what they have learned and create a poster in Canva, reviewed here. With nine different modules, break students into nine smaller groups and assign each group a module to complete. Students can print the included science notebook to take notes, and when they are done, have them Jigsaw and teach one another about what they learned. Need a refresher for Jigsaw?
