Conserving the habitats of birds is an international concern. This United Kingdom site (RSPB) examines various conservation issues, including the habitats for birds. Most of the focus is on the UK; however, there are more than a few links to international efforts, such as the Albatross Task Force. This page is for the Resources for Teachers; however, the main site has a variety of searchable databases as well as these activities on the issues facing different species of birds. Check out their free lessons, including the ones on TES (the link is under the Activity Sheets). Finally, don't forget to look at the For Kids and For Families; you might find something you can adapt for your classroom or online learning.

In the Classroom

There is a lot to explore here. You could start by engaging students with one of the activities on this page, then go to the home page and briefly look at the articles listed there, or go to the Birds and wildlife tab and have students choose something of interest. Have small groups divide up the articles to read and investigate. Then have students with the same article meet to become the expert on that topic (in cooperative learning, this is known as Jigsaw). Have each student in the Jigsaw group create an Awesome ScreenShot, reviewed here, where they can make digital notes with lines, text, or shapes. Once they form back into their original small group, they can report what they learned from the other group to their group members.

Here's a site that documents the achievements of female physicians while also providing lesson plans and information that will show students (at all levels) how physicians do their work. The biographies of women physicians - some dating back into the 19th century - are probably the strongest section of this site, but the lesson plans are also well worth a look. This site could be used in history, career planning, science, or women's history studies. The activities come in text or Flash, and all the other information is definately worth your time.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans offered in this site! There is also a recommended book list which could be a great addition to a classroom reading list, or as a list students can choose from for a book report. This is an excellent site for any study of women in the workplace and the evolution of the medical field.

If you'd like to incorporate elements of the history of aviation into a unit on science or history, this site's nice collection of features on significant aviation history events could be useful. There's a nice selection of items that spread over the years from the 1920s through the present. There could be more depth, but the essential information is presented well.

In the Classroom

Each of the individual web explorations could easily be used to introduce separate units within a history class. When applicable, select the exploration you would like students to work on and save it as a favorite on classroom computers. Have students go through the information and make a quick and small poster to show what they have learned. We recommend an online poster creator such as Padlet, reviewed here. The site offers information commonly left out of textbooks, but still relevant enough to apply to the Standards of Learning. They definitely make for interesting activators or introductions to units.

Nothing fancy about this site, which offers a surprisingly digestible set of comparisons of the distances from here to there in the cosmos. The author abandons scientific notation in favor of long strings of zeros in the numbers, and it has the intended effect. The images, of course, are of the sort that NASA does best.

Pretty it isn't, but this site about the serendipity surrounding the discovery of nuclear fission (and many other scientific achievements) emphasizes how a combination of knowledge, research, and happy coincidence contributes to many scientific advances. It's a great point of view for physics and science students to see.

In the Classroom

Use the audio files on this site to introduce one of the corresponding topics in a science class over the interactive whiteboard. There are also teacher guides that provide a few simple ideas as to how to work these files into your classroom. This could be a great way to show a case study in your classroom, providing something tangible for students to listen to, supplementing their normal text.

Created by a physics teacher, this site offers a collection of webquest-like and similar interactive activities that help explain topics typically found in a physics curriculum. As with any such collection, the quality of the resources varies, but you'll likely find one or more that fit nicely with your own curriculum.

In the Classroom

While not technically a webquest, this site has a lot of extension activities that could be used at the end of a lesson or as a review before a new one. Accommodate today's students, and have them complete the activities on Google Docs, reviewed here, making it easier for them to receive feedback and reduce the amount of messy papers you need to grade.

Teachers interested in presenting the scientific process by which these advances were made will find the information here a useful addition. Good information; not a lot of "whiz-bang."

Oxford University's online chemistry offerings include this collection of "virtual experiments" in a number of areas, along with a complete online "pre-university chemistry course." While the entire collection may be more than most secondary teachers can use, the individual components - with lots of animations and video - are well worth a look, especially if your laboratory resources are limited.

Photography can be both an art form and a form of scientific inquiry. Photos of People and Cultures can promote human understanding better than any written words. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images. As always, the photos themselves are exquisite. You will need to sign up for the free newsletter (with email) to view the photos.

In the Classroom

Share a photo of the day as an activator at the start of a lesson on your projector or interactive whiteboard (IWB). Allow a student of the day to select his/her photo of the day as a class inspiration. Share a photo as a visual writing prompt. Use tools on your IWB to discover and reveal design elements in the photos in art class. Use selected collections on laptops with student partners (galleries) to provide a visual experience of a location or culture you are studying, engage students and enhance learning by asking students to use Padlet, reviewed here, to record their observervations for visual evidence of some of the major concepts you have discussed in class.

The NIST Physics Laboratory offers this condensed history of time measurement, which chronicles the evolution of time-keeping from ancient calendars through the establishment of time zones and atomic clocks. The text is readable and the graphics are interesting while still loading quickly. Depending on the amount of detail you want to absorb, this one would work well for upper elementary through secondary students.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups. Have each group read and interpret individual sections on this site - making sure every group has a different one. The intentions of this will be to have students analyze this information and present it to their peers to "teach" each other. The text portions are challenging, so you should pair weaker readers with a partner as they research on this site. To show what they have learned from this site, challenge students to create an online interactive infographic to share using Visme, reviewed here, or an interactive timeline using Timeliner, reviewed here.

This site offers secondary students an extensive exposure to genetics, DNA and gene sequencing, and the problems and procedures that have been tackled to advance current DNA science to its current state. This is a rich resource that could almost serve as a complete tutorial, but teachers will more likely want to use it as a reference tool to supplement classroom or textbook presentations. You'll need strong readers to work through this one.

In the Classroom

Use the interactive timeline as a learning center. Have students tour the timeline, with the purposes of finding what they think are the 10 most important events in the history of DNA. Have students create a multimedia presentation of their top 10 events using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows users to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate their photos as if it is a news report. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try Pikwizard, reviewed here.
