Shipwrecks fascinate, and this collection of underwater explorations of sunken ocean liners will only fuel students' curiosity. There are maps, images, and explanations of how undersea exploration works. While this site is the companion to a PBS program, it stands alone nicely.

This site from San Francisco's Exploratorium chronicles the journey of a team of scientists in 2001 and from McMurdo sound to the South Pole. There is also a link to Ice Stories from 2007-2008. Study topics included everything from global warming to continental drift, and there are lots of reports and images to prove it. Even though this site is a bit dated, it still contains a lot of information to discover. This would be a nice background site for an Antarctica unit. Though the videos require Quick Time, there is plenty of information on this site to make your visit worthwhile!

In the Classroom

Share this information with your students to use for research projects. Have your students create a Piktochart AI Infographic Maker, reviewed here to show the difference in global warming from the present to 16 years ago!

While it covers all aspects of American involvement with nuclear activities, this site's coverage of the history of atomic investigation will be particularly attractive to students and teachers. There is a timeline on the history of atomic energy, and the teacher's section includes several activities built on the effort to build the first atomic bomb. There's a lot of content in this site that is too advanced for secondary students, but creative teachers will find lots of opportunities here.

In the Classroom

Save this site in your favorites on your class computers and use it as a point of reference for students working on research projects or papers. The information is reliable and plentiful, spanning all issues of atomic energy - from the Manhattan Project to Nuclear Facilities, this site has it all. It is a little advanced, but science and history teachers in the upper levels of high school will appreciate the resources this site has to offer.

NASA offers an easy-to-use collection of images of the planets, their moons, and other comets, asteroids, and similar objects that pass by from time to time. Many of the images are indexed by the mission which obtained them, but the thumbnails will help you find what you're looking for. Great image resource for a solar system unit.

This is by far the best web-dissection site we've seen. The site lets students do a hands-on dissection, complete with detailed explanations of each step. Better yet, this site is available in either of two forms - a straightforward dissection or an expanded version that includes pretests and quizzes intermixed with the dissection content. If you have more students than frogs, this one's for you.

Follow a team of scientists visiting Antarctica from December, 2001 to January, 2002. If you miss the live events, there are lots of reports filed on activities conducted during the visit. This site also has background sections on the Antarctic climate, the history of exploration, and the scientific tools and tasks involved in Antarctic science. From the Exploratorium.

In the Classroom

Use this videos on this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the water cycle or Continental Drift during an Earth Sciences or Physical Geography class. This activity would work best with a graphic organizer - we recommend Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

The link concerning continental drift, entitled Gondwanaland, would also be a great activator to that unit. Share the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector to help students visualize how the spreading of the continents took place over the eons.

While this exercise is from a site on science and optics, the KWL strategy - a structured form of questioning and answering - is applicable to the study of many topics other than science. Teachers will like this one because it outlines multiple strategies for both inquiry and presentation, giving examples from science, literature, and art.

In the Classroom

If you're not familiar KWL, this is a great starting point.

In the Classroom

The possibilities for this lesson expand exponentially with the use of web-based resources for images, research, and creation of student projects. Many of the activities would also be well-suited for interactive whiteboard.
