This is a detailed retrospective that examines the hurricane which did extensive damage in Florida in August, 1992.

In the Classroom

Divide students into small groups and have them take notes about Hurricane Andrew using Memo Notepad, reviewed here. Next enhance student learning by having them take notes about Hurricane Ian - September 2022, reviewed here. Extend student learning by having them make a Padlet, reviewed here, with columns to make comparisons between the two hurricanes. Then ask them to use Padlet to create a video to explain to other students what was most significant about both hurricanes. Ask them to respond to other student's videos. This is a link to the Padlet Help section for posting video or an image.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a lesson on hurricanes and similar extreme weather systems. Have students examine the site on classroom computers, preferably with the assistance of a graphic organizer. We recommend creating graphic organizers before the activity, giving students focus as well as highlighting what is most important to know from the site. For help making guides, try Graphic Organizer Maker, (reviewed here).

In the Classroom

Use the data to determine where the most severe hurricanes occur and to determine why they occur in those areas. Research the science behind the events and reasons for the devastation. Have students create an action plan in the event of severe hurricanes or identify ways to lessen devastating effects of some of the events. Students can also research recent year's data and make comparisons of the numbers.

The Genetic Science Learning Center at the University of Utah provides a collection of information and other resources on genetics and genetic engineering for students and their teachers. This is a particularly well-organized academic site.

In the Classroom

Use this site to help students review a unit on genetics. There are plenty of links that students can access reviewing a number of subjects within genetics. Save the site on your class wiki or web page to allow students to access it both in and out of the classroom. The "tour the basics" link would also be great at the beginning of a unit on genetics to assess what knowledge the students already have, and bring them all up to speed. Any science teacher should save this site and use it frequently in their class!

These resources from the National Human Genome Research Institute offer a series of modules for secondary students that deal with genetics, genome sequencing, and the ethical implications of genetic research and development. Find links to Journals, Resources, and Databases. This material assumes some level of prior experience on the part of both teacher and student. The site also provides a number of links to additional web resources. This is challenging content for faculty and students willing to make the effort. Students will find the glossary, found here, helpful.

In the Classroom

Looking at the map of the all the human chromosomes (GeneMap99) is an interesting way to introduce genetics and tie research into genetic studies in the classroom. Students can investigate the traits of students in the classroom and determine the different variations. Provide a link to this site to determine the chromosome and location on the chromosome for the trait. Find data about the frequency of the different variations in different populations around the world. Use the trait to complete genetic crosses. Do research and create an informational brochure, blog post, website page, or presentation on the findings. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration!

This nationally published news source makes for an excellent resource for a teacher or student looking for current events. There's information ranging from politics, global news, business, technology - even pop culture. This would be useful in any classroom where a knowledge of the now was focused on.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a resource for current events projects - assign students various weeks through out the semester in which they are to be the class news reporter, keeping their peers up to date and informed. Have students research whats going on via this news site, and present a small presentation at the beginning of class every day during their week. Students can either orally present, or for the technologically inclined, create a short video summarizing the same information. Have students create news briefs and share them using a tool such as SchoolTube reviewed here.
