These could make great classroom decorations, and the lesson materials are thorough and grade-specific. Try this one on students interested in the physics of flight or a career in aviation.

Teachers and parents may find this an attractive service opportunity for students eager to "do something" about the plight of civilians in Afghanistan and the middle east. The backpacks cost $10 each.
In the Classroom
For students interested in how they can help the economic and educational problems in Afghanistan, recommend this site as a means for them to get involved. In the Classroom
Beyond the obvious application for comparing treatment of news events around the country and the world, this site could also be used for writing, world language practice, a look at editorial choices, or other social studies applications. Include this resource in a media literacy unit on bias or during Newspapers in Education month. With elementary students, share many newspapers on a projector or interactive whiteboard as students identify the various elements of a newspaper article. The Lesson Plan link above contains and excellent poster link for familiarizing students with the elements that comprise the front page of a newspaper. Download it along with the lesson plan. The poster utilizes a sample front page from The Washington Post to illustrate how a front page is formatted. Have students analyze the sample front page by answering the suggested questions. Once students are familiar with the elements of a newspaper, extend their learning and challenge them to create their own class or school newspaper using Printing Press, reviewed here. If articles are too long for some readers, or if you are teaching summarizing skills consider using Skim.it, reviewed here, a Chrome extension that reduces articles into a 100-word summary.

This is a nicely done animated site about the history of Minnesota for elementary students. It concentrates on major industries of the state as the basis for a portrayal of life in Minnesota in the late 1800s. the illustrations and stories have a sort of "comic book" feel, but the information is well designed and well presented. Students in other states will find this a nice introduction to nineteenth century life on the prairie.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an introductor or activator on a lesson concerning Westward Expansion. Introduce the site on the Interactive whiteboard or projector, before allowing students to explore the site in pairs. There's lots of great content in this one. Click Our Programs in the upper right corner to find he classroom section icalled Teach It, which ncludes lesson plans, as well as a series of very well done "journeys" that describe the industries and people that have had an effect on Connecticut history. Many of these are suitable for use in other states.

The American Memory Collection at the Library of Congress does it again with this survey of the waves of immigration that have swept the American shores. While this site has a number of incomplete "exhibit" areas, the associated lesson plans are there, and well worth a look for those whose curricula include immigration. It may take some trial and error to find those resources that fit best.

While this site really assumes the reader knows the story of the women who helped ferry aircraft of all sorts from factory to front during World War II, the various site elements offer glimpses of the people, airplanes, and places that made the WASPs an indispensable element of the war effort. The sounds add some additional realism. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. There are a couple of audio files that use Flash, however there is a LOT more to see on this site.
In the Classroom
Use the video on this site on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector to show students who the WASPS were as well as the contribution they made to the war effort. This would be a great addition to a lesson on WWII as well as the fight for equality between the sexes. Click on the Gallery and view Above and Beyond about the 38 WASPs who died during service to their country. The information here is very brief. You may want to ask small groups of students to select three of four WASPs to research and share their stories using a tool like Sway, reviewed here. The Library of Congress does its usually thorough job in this presentation on the roles of female journalists during World War II. These included domestic and foreign assignments. While we wish more of these images were available on line, there are certainly enough photos in this collection to provide students with a sense of what war meant to America in the 1940s.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the battle front in WWII. The content is still valid, and would be a great center to break up others based on the battles and the men who are normally focused on. This site from the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts is almost as good as a field trip. Stuffed with images, video clips, and text, it offers a presentation on Modernism that runs from the British arts and crafts movement in the 1880s through to American Art Deco of the 1940s. There are images, text, and video narration for each segment, providing a nice evolutionary tour. Use the pieces together or individually as supplemental material for art history, or as an adjunct to an American or European history class.
In the Classroom
Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of modernism in the past two centuries. Use the site's images and virtual exhibits to showcase the movement being talked about to compliment your class lectures. Another useful item is that some of the exhibits have a quick video clip that can help introduce the idea to your class in a way that foreshadows the rest of your lecture. It's an art and architectural style, not a school building. This site from the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts offers a visual perspective on the art and architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, William Gray Purcell, and others. In addition to showing works of art, the site offers several interactive tours of Wright houses, many in the twin cities area. Art teachers will use this one as a great American design example. There is a lot of information on this site. The a few complementary images (not the main images) for each topic require Flash.

While most of this site deals with visiting Versailles, students will find sections dealing with the King's daily routine and the life of the French court in the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, there are images of some of the more notable artwork, and of course, large sections available "seulement en Francais," which we hope will please the world language teachers. There's nothing like it elsewhere. There is an incredible amount of information to discover at this site by scrolling down the home page AND click on the Explore tab at the top of the home page. There are a few videos that are hosted on YouTube, if your district blocks YouTube they may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the menus to explore the "hidden" content. Then divide the class into small groups based on their area of interest and have them research their topic. Challenge them to research other sources to learn even more about the palace and its inhabitants. Here's a site with dozens of images and histories of military and civilian aircraft. The site also includes histories of many aircraft used by U.S. presidents. Click Education from the top menu bar and find a section of lesson plans by scrolling down the page. View a list of the scavenger hunts on the right menu bar. Type videos in the search bar to find a list. This site could assist with research on aviation history or related topics.
In the Classroom
Click on "explore museum exhibits" from the right menu, then scroll down the page and choose from a list of exhibit areas for photos of each plane and weapon featured in the museum. Aerospace teachers can use this site for example photos of planes being studied in class, while history teachers can use those same photos in units concerning the evolution of transportation or warfare. This site truly is an interdisciplinary webpage, and can be used to supplement lectures in many classrooms. After introducing this site, allow student pairs, groups, or individuals to explore and find an area of interest. Then extend student learning by asking them to do some research to see what more they can learn about their area of interest and have them create a Google Drawings, reviewed here. Challenge your students to a discussion using the ideas from Thinkalong, reviewed here. To help students prepare for the discussion, have them write about their opinion(s) for selected questions first. Replace paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their thoughts and understanding about the book. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, exchange paper and pen and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. After completing the discussions, challenge older students to choose a question and create a script for the ideas that emerged from the discussion; then strengthen student learning and have them put it into a podcast.
