The Washington Post presents this extensive site which examines the conduct and consequences of the Gulf War in 1991. Complete with maps, damage assessment charts, and commentary by former commanders, the site chronicles the war's effect on the middle east while discussing the problems inherent in managing a limited conflict. Good starting point for a discussion of the interplay between military, political, and diplomatic interests in American foreign policy.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an extended learning center during a lesson(s) on the Gulf War. Because there is a lot of information on this site, we recommend creating a follow-along or guide to highlight for students what is the most important. There's lots of information here, most of it in the form of text. There are also maps, images, and the like. The site is particularly noteworthy for the depth of its content, which makes it a great starting point for on-line research.
In the Classroom
Although there may not be any current updates on this site, there is a lot of background information that could help students who need catching up do so without being singled out. Use the site as a learning center or station, clearly defining which part students should focus on. Based on what they read, have students create timelines of topics such as political rulers, battles, colonization efforts, factors leading to the fall of Rome, etc. Have students use a tool such as Preceden, reviewed here. In the Classroom
Use the images and videos in the exhibit for a visual discovery activity. Select 3-4 images, placing them on a slide-show presentation. Have students take notes on each of the images and videos, noting what they observe, infer and predict about each one. After the presentation, have a class discussion based around student notes. This would be great review activity before an assessment, allowing students to apply the knowledge just learned. This site from the British Museum offers a literate, visually attractive, yet very approachable on-line study resource on Egyptian culture, customs, and history. The site has numerous topics and layers, with most content delivered through stories. There are also instructional games and quizzes. Five stars for this one! The games require SHOCKWAVE. The site includes the link to get it, or you can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

This foundation-supported site offers information on the various native cultures found in the Orinoco region of Venezuela. Learn about tribal customs, shamans and religious beliefs, and the cultures of these native peoples in an educational site with spectacular design and elegant execution.
In the Classroom
Use the online exhibit as a introductory activity to some of the native culture of Venezuela. Have students look at the site in cooperative learning groups, with the intentions of summarizing the points of the collection in a multimedia presentation. Have students use a tool such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. Use the historic timeline to study the spread of Islam to Malaysia and the rest of South East Asia during the 15th century. This site offers a thorough and graphically well-designed introduction to the history, cultures, and 20th century politics of India and its neighbors. While a bit text-heavy, visuals support most of the sections, and the content could be useful for research projects or general information. The site includes a short biography of Mahatma Ghandi. This is a "labor of love" site created by two faculty members at UCLA.

This is an elegant Indian site describing archeological excavations at the site of Lothal, an ancient city on the Indus river. There are interactive maps, descriptions of life in the ancient city, and a catalog of artifacts found during the excavations. Beautiful quality, and a little slow as a result, but if you're looking for examples of how archaeologists work, it's worth the wait.
In the Classroom
Use the images in this site to create a visual discovery activity during a unit on the Indus River Valley. Select 3-5 of the more powerful images, placing them in a Powerpoint presentation to be displayed over the interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow the class to view the images for 30-45 seconds each, writing down what they observe, infer and predict about each image. After all the images have been seen, start a class discussion based on student's findings. National Geographic publishes this ongoing collection of short documentary pieces, each of which has both text and audio narration in high quality stereo sound, with lots of natural effects. For students with special needs, who have trouble either reading or attending, these short sound clips provide a well-constructed exposure to topics ranging from science to cultures and celebrations. Watch for new segments each week, along with a monthly feature presentation.
In the Classroom
Because there are a LOT of short recordings on this site, be sure to examine it thoroughly before allowing students to use it. Find one or several informative recordings that could benefit your classroom, and use them as introductory pieces before beginning a unit or lesson. Play the recording using the interactive whiteboard as a starter, previewing the lesson to come, allowing students to reflect on the recording via writing or verbally in a class discussion. Enhance student learning and replace paper pen by asking students to write blogs sharing information learned using a site like Edublog, reviewed here. Edublog offers tools for creating class and individual blogs. Share this site with your school's administration and PTSA to find out about mentoring groups in your community. The Southern Poverty Law Center is a large, multifaceted organization working for racial justice in the south and beyond. The site uses a three-pronged approach to dealing with racial and social injustice. The three methods include monitoring hate groups and extremists, using the court system to advance reform, and education provided through it's Learning for Justice program.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the information on the site to include when teaching lessons about equality, racism, and social injustice. Learn more about the classroom resources offered through Learning for Justice, reviewed here. Include selections from the Features and Stories portion of the site as part of any integrated unit. Consider using a learning management system like Actively Learn, reviewed here, to include videos and additional text sources as part of your unit. Actively Learn also includes resources that provide feedback on student learning. Extend learning by asking students to gather data and share information through various digital tools including infographics and digital storytelling resources. This site has SO many resources! Use the activities as learning center or stations, or complete them together as a class using the interactive whiteboard or projector. There are also practice quizzes and tests that can be used to help students review for assessments or to assess what students already know coming into a new unit. The activities are very cute and actually quite humerous - just make sure to include headphones for individual computers. While it is targeted toward travelers, this site offers an incredible amount of information on countries, including history, economy, culture, events, reading material (reference and personal accounts of experiences), etc. It's easy to navigate and search. This site could be used for many disciplines (science, English, history, art, music, even math-unit on other currencies and how to convert).
In the Classroom
Use this site during a geography, economics, or civic class on a unit that compares the cultures of countries around the world. Save the site as a favorite on classroom computers, and have students access the site individually. Assign every student a country and have them create a travel brochure about it using a tool such as Padlet (reviewed here). Make sure to have students include similar topics to allow for a compare/contrast discussion to follow! This Washington, DC - based site offers a collection of information from foreign embassies located in the nation's capital. Its most useful feature is a set of links to the embassies themselves, some of which are fairly obscure. Good resource for a student interested in finding out specifics of a foreign country and their diplomatic services.
In the Classroom
Use the embassy row tour as a hands-on activity during a lesson on international diplomacy. Have students look at the site in cooperative learning groups, with the intentions of creating their own tour of embassy row. Using the images and information on the site, have students create a multi-media presentation detailing what an embassy is, why it's important, and show examples of embassies in D.C. Have students create a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows users to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report.
