As digital media increasingly replaces traditional media, students must have the skills to think critically about these new types of texts. Media literacy - the ability to skillfully read and write in a wide range of message forms - allows students to identify themes and issues emerging from popular culture and has related standards that have been incorporated across content areas and grade levels nationwide. Join us to learn more about this information age survival skill. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand the importance of teaching media literacy in the classroom; 2. Explore media literacy resources; and 3. Learn to use the five key questions of media literacy when planning lessons. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

SchoolStack is an instructional design system that provides tools for personalized learning options for students. After creating an account, the first step is designing or choosing lessons from SchoolStack's library. Lesson options include adding exit tickets or making tasks optional or required. Next, add assignments to a "stack," like creating a choice board of activities. Then, assign stacks to a whole class, groups, or individuals. Dashboards for students, teachers, and caregivers track students' progress throughout their lessons. Free accounts offer limited stack creation, limited access to the lesson library, and the ability to add one teacher collaborator.
In the Classroom
Use SchoolStack to differentiate learning for different student needs and abilities by quickly modifying lesson activities to share with individual students or groups. Replace your current homework activities using SchoolStack to provide students with various options for completing learning activities. Offer activities that meet student interests and learning styles within each stack to encourage student interest and participation. Follow the links to access featured resources, podcasts, teaching tips, and more. In addition, there is an extensive library for educators divided into grade-level categories. Each category includes resources for pedagogy, children's literature, lesson plans and activities, and additional classroom resources. Also, this website provides links to teaching about Africa divided into topics that include climate change, geography, literature and language, and others.

Add this excellent site to your other resources for teaching about the continent of Africa. Consider using a curation tool such as Milanote, reviewed here, to organize your ideas and projects into one location. Add links, notes, images, and more onto one Milanote vision board to make it easy to find and view your resources and ideas. HyperDocs is a free resource library for digital lesson plan templates for all subjects and grade levels available to use without registration. Most lessons use Google tools, including Google Docs, reviewed here, Google Slides, reviewed here, and Google Jamboard, reviewed here. Begin your search by exploring the basic templates featured based on different lesson models, or use the keyword search bar to find specific topics. Next, filter down results by grade level, lesson subject, and focus area. Be sure to click the "apply filters" box after making your choices. Each hyperdoc includes a preview for viewing the document; choose the link to "make a copy" to copy and personalize as desired. Although registration isn't required to access and copy the hyperdocs provided on the site, creating an account offers you the opportunity to receive notification of the latest additions to the site.

Freedom's Ring is an interactive website project created by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute at Stanford University. This site provides an immersive, multimedia experience where students can take an in-depth look into the Civil Rights period of American History. Students may explore the speech by choosing to display Dr. King's written words, spoken words, or both while listening to the recording. Throughout the address, lines of text are highlighted and lead the reader to a more in-depth look at the time period or reasonings for particular words used. The multimedia player where the speech is displayed makes it easy for students to pause and play by using the spacebar and marking sections of the text that have links to further information with longer lines. The entire site is also indexed, so students may choose to read the entire speech and view the entire directory of supplemental materials.
In the Classroom
This resource takes a comprehensive look inside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous speech. Teachers may want to use this site to engage students by playing the address at the beginning of a lesson or by having students preview the oration by scrolling through and observing the pictures and graphics displayed throughout. Instruction can be enhanced by having the students view and analyze the supplemental materials and videos. Extend your student's knowledge by having them create their own interactive slide analyses presentations made with Canva for Education, reviewed here to reflect on their learning and share with their peers. You may also want to ask students to comment on others' videos to compare similar and different viewpoints.Comments

Student knowledge construction is what happens when students go beyond just reproducing what they have learned, but generate their own ideas and demonstrate understanding of what makes the information unique. The skills of knowledge construction range from inferring to analysis to interpretation to synthesis and evaluation. Many of these skills may also be considered "critical thinking." While teaching these skills can be a challenge, finding useful web resources can be simple. Peruse this collection to find resources to use in your lessons for all grade levels to encourage student knowledge construction.
