In the Classroom
Students will love using the computer to create and save flash cards! Show your students how to use the site on a projector the first time, then have them create their own flash card sets or sets for their classmates as part of review for unit tests. Use YOUR user account for student safety. Be sure to search for card already made, but remember that others COULD have errors. Students - ages 11 to 16 - can solicit the help of a virtual librarian on this British site that offers an "Ask Jeeves" style of homework assistance. A teacher-monitored live advice session is offered during evening hours (U.K. time - roughly 2pm-5pm Eastern time).
In the Classroom
While this site does not have all of the answers, and the search method can be a bit awkward (correct spelling is a must!), it is still useful as a resource to point students in the right direction when they need more information about a topic. Use this interactive geography quiz as an independent review activity or for Geography Bee preparation. Select from a variety of topics and regions of the world. Some of the advertising is rather annoying, but the quizzes themselves are great.
In the Classroom
Use the "celebrate Birthdays" to create a "this day in history" display for the classroom. The other sections of the website would be excellent to review for any subject, so find the appropriate subject and have students open the site on individual computers. In groups of 2-3, have students compete to see who can get the highest score! This well-organized, searchable site, created and maintained by the Internet Scout Project of the University of Wisconsin, contains a wealth of useful, interactive, and motivating resources for teachers, students and parents. Currently, the site focuses on French, Spanish, and Japanese, although German and Italian resources can be found by following links to many of the recommended sites. Content levels range from beginner to advanced. Links to interactive flash cards, quizzes, and games that strengthen vocabulary and language comprehension are among the high points of this site. Many of the resources provide independent practice, authentic exposure, and opportunities for cultural exploration.
Becoming a member is free and enables the site to personalize your visit by preferred language. A new "Word of the Day" is a homepage feature, as are daily updates of the newest additions to the site.

This site provides a wealth of review links, activities and lesson plans that would assist any French teacher greatly! Some of the review games would make excellent learning centers, so save those as a favorite on a classroom computer and allow students to use them towards the end of a unit. Are students puzzled by which dictionary entry to select when they check for a word's meaning? This interesting video shows how the two speakers select the best meaning for a common vocabulary word. Also find a related, interactive "web" lesson and worksheets in PDF format.
In the Classroom
Use this video clip as a quick introduction to helping students who are debating over which meaning to choose in a common dictionary entry. For a special project, have students diagram a word's several meanings with an online tool such as Interactive Three Circle Venn Diagram, reviewed here.
