Engage your students and knockdown participation barriers with GoSoapBox, a free web-based student response system. Set up an event, or GoSoapBox space, for your class. Students enter the SoapBox through a unique code, and only the instructor can view the student names. Accessible through a computer or mobile device, GoSoapBox offers many tools for some creative Q&A in your classroom. The confusion barometer allows the teacher to assess the students' understanding of the topic. The poll and quiz tools provide a formative assessment option. Post questions or topics for your students using the GoSoapBox discussion tool. An option to post anonymously is available as well as many other settings for using the Social Q&A tool. Students can post questions for their peers or the teacher to answer. Coupled with an Internet connected device, GoSoapBox provides an outside the box classroom experience. GoSoapBox is free for class sizes under 30 students.

After making your free account, describe the type of feedback requested, such as details, a clear thesis statement, or the use of specific claims to support information. Next, upload the writing to be analyzed or copy and paste the text into the designated area. After submitting your writing sample, gotFeedback provides you with feedback, including suggestions for improvement and a sample revision.
In the Classroom
Use gotFeedback to provide quick assessments of students' writing and to focus on specific ways to improve their work. Use the Prompt Guide on gotFeedback to understand how to provide clear and actionable feedback to support students. If desired, share the revised writing example with students to use as a model for editing their work, or share the feedback and ask them to change based on that information. Use Google Docs or Microsoft Word for students to track and share writing revisions. For example, ask students to begin writing projects in Google Docs. After sharing their work, use gotFeedback to analyze the work based on your criteria, then share the feedback portion with the student. Include Grammar Lookup with other options for students to use when editing and revising work. Have students copy and paste writing projects into the text editor for a final check for spelling and grammar mistakes after making their last revisions. Continued use of this tool helps students correct writing on their own after seeing common errors in their writing. Never send out a newsletter or post to your web page with spelling or grammar errors again! Use Grammar Lookup to spell check and suggest corrections for any published writing projects. Reinforce learning by asking students to share before and after of written projects. Along with submitting a rough draft and final draft, ask students to take a screenshot of text copied into Grammar Lookup along with the highlighted errors. Gravity offers a video response tool to promote asynchronous classroom discussions. Use Gravity to record video or audio prompts or create screen recordings to share. Register for an account using your email, then make a community to use as a home for video prompts. Prompts are then created in community folders and shared using a join code. Students join the discussion using the join code and create an account using their email. Free accounts for educators offer unlimited participants and one minute of video recording time.
In the Classroom
Use Gravity to create collaborative discussions on virtually any classroom topic. Challenge students to reflect on their learning at the end of a unit, research project, or literature circle. Here are just a few example questions to ask: What are some things you did well on this assignment? What mistakes did you make on your last assignment that you did not make on today's assignment? What would you do differently? What would you like to learn more about? Create a community folder for student questions; for example, ask students to create a screen-share video to demonstrate questions they have when solving math problems. What better way to learn than through making? Collaborate and make items for the web using these webmaker tools. These Hacktivity Kits are easy for anyone to organize a session and learn about creating items for the Internet. Use these kits to facilitate classes that focus on webmaking. Each section includes what you will need to consider to prepare for using the kits. Kits include sample lessons, projects, and activities. Find documents (cheat sheet for HTML!) that can be printed in each of the Resources sections. Use activities that assess progress and even provide badges. Each kit has a Big Picture, Objectives, Questions, and all related material. Find a variety of kits: X-Ray Goggles, Popcorn, Thimble, Online Storytelling, Revolutions in Media, Make It Share It, and more. As the name suggests, the Hacktivity kits can be hacked as well. Choose the parts that work for your class and expand upon others when more resources are needed. Since the products are created for the web, the tools used to make them are web applications. The recommended browsers include Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. Note: It is important that all browsers be updated to the latest versions in order to use the web application effectively. Hashify is a simple tool to create web pages with no HTML experience.... and more. Think of it as the plainest of plain vanilla online writing spaces. Type everything in the left side of the tool and it is automatically formatted on the right side. The tools on the left toolbar tool add formatting: headers, bold, bulleted lists, etc. This tool offers options in between plain text writing and the formatting you would expect in Microsoft Word. It's also supported in many different web applications, including Tumblr and some Wikis. It is a great way to organize notes, to-do lists, or other items. It has all the advantages of plain text writing, but acts like a word processor. Use this tool as a minimalist writing system to jot down your thoughts without worrying too much about the appearance. Export the finished result with formatting added. Click Save. Share above the left typing area to obtain the URL to the page you have created. Others can add their own ideas, too! No membership is required.

Use this minimalist tool for a student scribe to keep track of key terms during a class discussion. Share the url with classmates for them to add their thoughts, as well. Headliner converts audio podcasts into YouTube videos and automatically transcribes the video's audio into captions. Register for an account to begin using Headliner, then choose from options that include manual and automatic audiograms, transcribe audio or video, caption a video, or use the advanced editor. Headliner also offers several templates, or you can upload your own. After choosing, follow the steps to select an aspect ratio, upload your video file, select a transcription language, and edit the portion of the video to transcribe. When ready, click to create your project and add additional items such as background audio, additional text or media, and more. To finish your project, choose to export your work and leave the tab open as your video generates. When complete, choose from several options to download your video, share to social media sites, or share using the URL of your project. Free accounts allow up to five projects monthly without watermarks, unlimited watermarked applications, and the ability to export videos in 1080p.

If your class is creating podcasts, use Headliner to convert podcasts to videos on YouTube to make them easier for some listeners to access. Adding transcripts provides options for making any of your videos more accessible to listeners of any language. For example, if your school has a large Spanish-speaking community, post videos and podcasts in both languages for everyone to view. This tool also works well when creating videos in other formats such as Animate from Audio, reviewed here. Your students don't need to write novels to take advantage of the many features of this site. Start out simple and use the character name and location generators as inspiration for creative writing projects. Share an article a week from the Knowledge Base on your class website as part of your writing lessons. After sharing articles, ask students to revise their work within Google Documents or Microsoft Word by adding highlights and comments to share changes. Homestyler is a free online interior design planner. Members choose a layout plan, add details such as doors, windows, and furnishings, and then decide on color schemes for interior decorating. Designs are viewable in both a 2D and 3D format. This is a free online program that requires no downloading. Registration does require an email address. This site may or may not be fully accessible inside your school filtering. Check to make sure all portions of this site are available when using your school's network. Homestyler does have a retail component that suggests certain name brands for appliances, and building supplies but the 3D designing capability outshines this form of advertising.
In the Classroom
Members click and drag design components onto the main layout page. The free draw tool is a bit trickier to control but is similar to drawing tools in other programs. The perimeter measurement scrolls alongside the line you are drawing. The interface for such a complicated concept is intuitive. Students will need explicit instructions on how to operate this program.Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to share the tutorial presentation and demonstrate how to use the design tools. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site. Consider this resource to help math students visualize how to compute the surface area of three-dimensional shapes and understand how area and volume change with scale. Social Studies and History teachers can ask students to re-create the interior of an early American home, Greek Temple or even their own classroom. With guidance, this could be a wonderful tool to help younger students understand interior mapping skills. Classrooms focusing on "real-world learning" may find this a valuable resource tool to help students create design plans for an alternative environment.

A teacher's life is full of many things to remember. Keep sticky notes wherever you go on your computer desktop, in a folder, and on a USB mini-drive. Separate podcasts are created for the different tags that you use. Search the tags that are on Huffduffer to find specific audio files. Add the Huffduffer bookmarklet to Firefox or Chrome to instantly create a podcast from audio files you find online.

Chat with over 1,000 historical figures, from Tutankhamun to Michael Jackson, with Humy's chatbots, or Humies. Create an account, then visit the Humies to search for specific characters or scroll through options that include diverse groups such as Greek Gods and Space Exploration. Select a character to begin your conversation and ask questions. Additional tools found on Humy include lesson planning and question generation tools. Visit the collections to find options to edit and share curated collections. The free subscription consists of 300 credits (approximately 25-30 chat conversations) and access to over 40 history collections; however, activating a collection uses many more credits than individual chat conversations.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free account provided by Humy to generate conversations on your interactive whiteboard with historical figures to introduce new lessons and units and engage students in upcoming activities. For example, before reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, select her name from the Humies to have a conversation to learn about her inspiration for writing the book and allow students to ask questions about her writing style and how she developed her storytelling skills. Use the chat conversations as a starting point for research projects on historical figures or periods. Create, collect, organize, and share video collections from YouTube and Vimeo easily with Huzzaz. Build a video library around any topic with just a few clicks. Click and drag the Huzzaz bookmarklet to your browser toolbar. Anytime you see a video, click the bookmarklet to save. Rearrange videos in your collection as desired. Add tags and brief descriptions. Add additional videos as desired. Share complete collections using links for Facebook, Twitter, and email. If your district blocks YouTube, then you may have to limit your choices to Vimeo.
In the Classroom
Create a classroom account and have students add videos for use with any classroom topic. Teach students to use tags you have approved so everyone can find the videos easily. Create and share video libraries for review and enrichment resources or to "flip" your classroom. Build a professional video library for sharing with colleagues during professional development sessions. Use embed codes for major blogging platforms to embed video collections directly into your blog or website. Embed codes also work well on a wiki, so you could embed a certain tag collection for students to review or learn.Edge Features:

Hypothesis is an easy to use tool for annotating, collaborating, and sharing web content. Add any URL to the search bar on the home page to begin using Hypothesis after creating your account. Create an annotation by highlighting text; the pop-up allows you to add notes including hyperlinks and tags to your annotation. Add notes or highlights using tools on the site. Save your notes for public viewing or just for your use. Invite others to view your notes or collaborate using the sharing link with your personal URL or with social media links. Click the Education tab on the top menu to see examples of classroom use, 10 Ways to Annotate With Students, Creating a Private Group, and more.
In the Classroom
Use Hypothesis as part of your flipped classroom. Annotate and share web resources with students and ask them to contribute notes and additional information. Have two characters from a book or two famous people text each other. Create short poetry using this tool. Provide some opening text and ask students to write their guesses of the other person's answers. Have students practice a dialogue or questions and answers. Create a fake text of a conversation and have students use inference skills to state what happened before and after the conversation. You could even use it as a writing prompt. Teach important texting etiquette using this tool. Use a fake text on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to display word definitions in a fun way. Use this site with your ESL/ELL students (or those learning to read) and have the site READ the text to the students.
