One Station offers "Diverse Views: Global Voices," or links to radio stations as well as specific shows in a multitude of countries. The opening page has broadcast language choices for selecting stations. The site includes summaries of content and evaluations of the reliability, frequency, and objectivity of the stations. Click to investigate a specific station and find clickable schedules for daily broadcasts. The "Listen Now" option brings the staion in over your computer. The WRN Podcast page offers listeners the choice of downloading as mp3s for later listening. The audio files are available using either Real Player and Windows Media Player. You can get these from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.
In the Classroom
Use this opportunity to introduce your students to the sounds of other culture or to hep develop listenting skills in a world language. High school social studies classes will benefit from following currenet events stories as portrayed in othe English-speaking media.

Several options are available for downloading, including podcasts. Hear selections read in other languages (Note that the public domain applies in the U.S. and may not in other languages/countries). You can search for works by category, genre, author, title, or reader. The site welcomes volunteer readers. The collection is constantly growing, so check back often.
In the Classroom
Use these for read-along listening, to help weaker readers or ENL/ELL students, or to practice listening and pronunciation. World language and literature teachers can play poetry or passages from lit texts in class or assign them as homework. Make sure you have headphones or speakers for your computer, if needed. This free site allows users to learn German, Spanish, or ESL (English) online by studying vocabulary and hearing it pronounced. Students can select English-Spanish or Spanish-English for example. In addition to learning word by word, viewers can select the conjugation approach and focus on verb forms. In this section, students must complete a sentence by inputting the correct verb tense in their selected language. Teacher-users can create their own lessons based on their needs, their previous results in the training, or their own ideas. A free login is required to participate in the lesson-creation section. This website will soon offer other languages, vocabulary and verb conjugations. There are some ads to ignore, but they are not obtrusive.
In the Classroom
Set up your own language reviews with this site. You can also encourage students to make their own lessons to review items they are having difficulty with. Ask each student group to create a challenge for the rest of the class and have a review day where groups try the others' challenges in a lab or on laptops. This well-illustrated visual dictionary has five categories of illustrations: biology vegetal, biology animal, human body, music, transport, and clothing. Click on one area find many thumbnail graphics. Click on the thumbnail graphic for the full-size, labeled image. For example, the human body category has 69 thumbnails. Click on the eye for an enlarged eye labeled with the scientifically correct terms. Definitions for the terms are at the bottom of the page. You can also search by the actual word. Click the Lexicon button to search all the detailed labels from all the illustrations, like "iris", a label on the "eye" page. The site is also available in French and Spanish, so it would be useful for French and Spanish language classes, ENL, or the general population.

Caution: Since this site was developed in France, the attitude toward nudity is different from that in the U.S. Illustrations under the human body section include nudity and labeling of ALL body parts. Although this site is a wiki and therefore editable by anyone who chooses to change the content, it highlights the differences between cultures and how people interpret behavior. Find out about what is considered "good" and "bad" etiquette in places all over the world. Perhaps your students would even like to write their own additions?
It is worth mentioning to your secondary students that the authorship of wiki content is unknown and would therefore be unacceptable as an "academic" source.
In the Classroom
Use this as a discussion-opener in your world language or world cultures class. If you put the Faux Pas wiki up on a projector or allow your students to explore it, assigning each group to find one thing that is perfectly acceptable in your home country but considered offensive in another, you can then discuss the differences one needs to consider in learning the language or history of that country. Practice Spanish grammar skills using these online exercises and study modules created by a professor from Colby College. You can even sign up to receive an email from her as she adds new content. Although these exercises were created for college courses, they start at the beginning and provide both grammatical and cultural information, illustrated with beautiful graphics. Among the topics of the "study modules" are Day of the Dead, the festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, and street kids in Colombia. There are extensive audio files (these require Quicktime) as well as online practice for grammar.

Use selected activities in class or as homework. Play the audio files on speakers from your classroom computer. Use the grammar practice as a link from your teacher web page for extra review before tests. Learn first year French, learn about French culture, and practice to supplement your current classroom lessons using this highly interactive site created by faculty and students from UT Austin while on-site in Lyon, France. Preview all vocabulary and grammar topics from the Bienvenue section and at the opening page of each chapter. Start with the audio alphabet and go through thirteen chapters, including topics such as love and money! There are videos throughout the program, made by the Texas students (certain to be a hit with your high schoolers!)as well as web-based activities with questions to answer. Your students can even download or RSS feed all the videos as podcasts via iTunes. This is a real treasury of great lessons, ready to go! Gifted students or those who would like to teach themselves French independently could do well with this site, also. You MUST have Quicktime to play the audio and video.

Play the videos on a projector in class as you start each topic or put the link for each chapter on your teacher web page for reinforcement and review. This Google feature allows international or ESL/ELL students to search for specifically designated pages (i.e., newspapers) in their own languages (i.e., French or Swahili) produced in specific countries (Ivory Coast or Kenya). Options include setting the interface to any language, getting on-the-spot translation, and also viewing the home country Google interface (i.e., www.google.cg - Republique du Congo) without having to import language scripts for the computer.

Could be used as an exciting tool in the foreign language classroom! You may have to talk to your network adiministrator on filtered school district networks, if they have blocked translation tools to prevent students from "doing" assignments via these tools. This translation site provides translations to and from English in 11 commonly spoken languages and offers both traditional and simplified Chinese. A useful site to bookmark on classroom computers for your students who need occasional translations of difficult words and concepts.

For teachers, this site also provides reverse translation in case students repeatedly say words you wish you could understand. NOte: some districts may block access to this site so foreign language students do not cheat on homework assignments.
