Learn about ten critical historical events as an investigative journalist using this interactive site created for middle and high school students. The events, starting in the 1760s and the early republic, continue to gender equality from the 1850s to the present. Each activity includes primary sources that provide perspective on how these cultural events affected civic life. Begin each activity with an introduction that includes an overview, essential questions, and information about relevant journalists during that period. Next, begin the investigation by examining primary sources and completing the included social media activities. The final portion of each event looks at the outcome reported by journalists and offers an opportunity for users to create their own front-page news story. Educator Guides provide guidance for using these interactives and their correlation to national standards. Registration isn't required; however, it is highly recommended as it allows you to complete case study questions within the site and save progress. If your district blocks YouTube, then the videos may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
This site is a must-have for middle and high school social studies teachers. Allow several days for students to complete individual case studies; if time is an issue, assign portions of a case instead of completing the entire activity. Another option is to share a case study as an ongoing flipped learning activity to complete over two or more weeks or as a supplement for gifted students to use as an independent learning activity. If assigning as a long-term activity, ensure students complete the registration and save their work. Then, as students complete the final activity of writing a news story, share their articles as a PDF using PDF Convertor, reviewed here, then upload all of the PDFs to the PDF to Flipbook Converter, reviewed here, to create a flippable magazine that includes all student-written articles.

Begin with a quick overview of how to set up a writer's workshop and suggestions for incorporating the writing process into your workshop. In addition to links with ideas by grade level, this section also includes ideas for differentiation and links to helpful digital resources. Lastly, visit the Downloadable Resources and Planning Sheets link, which contains an assortment of printable organizers, templates, and printable documents.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this site and the many resources to include with your other lessons and activities for your writer's workshop. Use Symbaloo, reviewed here, to share and organize student resources. For example, include letter writing templates, links to online dictionaries and thesauruses, and examples of writing projects for students to access easily. Extend learning by asking students to share writing projects by choosing from various multimedia tools. For example, ask emerging writers to share their stories using Write Reader, reviewed here. Write Reader includes options for adding recordings, a place for student writing, and correct spelling on each page. Another digital book creator to share with students is StoryJumper, reviewed here. StoryJumper includes options for writing and sharing collaborative stories and uploading custom images, including custom characters designed by the story author.

Finding and implementing engaging lessons is difficult and time-consuming; Ditch That Textbook offers practical teaching ideas that adapt quickly to all content and grade levels. There are three main areas of the site to search for resources - the Blog, Google Ideas, and Resources. Blog content includes suggestions for feedback, gamifying classrooms, and sources for finding free content. Use the keyword search to look for specific information. The Google Ideas section shares material for all things Google, including using Chromebooks. Scroll down the page to find ideas sorted by Google tools and links to videos, templates, and related blog posts. Select the Resources link to find an abundance of free templates, how-to videos, and tools for remote learning. Be sure to dig around at length; there is much more available on this site, including a handful of free online courses for educators. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

Engage students and get them excited to jump into learning with tech tools to support direct instruction for vocabulary. Learn to implement direct instruction based on Marzano's strategies to expand vocabulary in all subject areas and increase success in school and on achievement tests. Using the six-step approach, we'll explore tech tools to help bring vocabulary from short-term memory into long-term memory. Discover how to choose tech tools you can use to increase student collaboration and provide data for formative assessments. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Review Marzano's strategies for vocabulary instruction; 2. Explore tools for vocabulary instruction; and 3. Understand how to use tech tools to create formative assessments for vocabulary. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Join us to explore a few cool tools that will help as you embark on this journey with your class. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand the components of computational thinking; 2. Explore Google tools that engage students in coding; and 3. Plan for the use of coding activities in the classroom. gotLearning is a platform for students and teachers to discuss and share student learning and educational goals. Upload documents, add videos, or scan items to begin the collaborative process. Documents open up inside a learning conversation that offers several options for creating ongoing discussions and feedback between teachers and students. Students use the app to scan and upload work to the platform. Use the educator dashboard to share and monitor assignments and to differentiate work that fits the needs of students easily. The free option for the school year 2022-2023 includes adding up to eight classes and 150 students within an account and integrates easily with Google Classroom.
In the Classroom
Use gotLearning to focus on student learning using formative feedback and collaboration based on students' work. One advantage of using this site is that it helps students to organize and share work through one tool instead of trying to manage it within notebooks or folders. Include other support staff, such as counselors, special education instructors, and ENL/ELL teachers, as part of your learning conversations to provide a holistic approach to student learning. Students can use this strategy to organize concepts presented in class and determine how they are interrelated with concepts students have already grasped. Understand how hexagonal thinking supports knowledge construction; 2. Explore three ways to use hexagonal thinking in the classroom; and 3. Plan for the use of hexagonal thinking during instruction. This site states that it is "the world's largest public domain media search engine" and provides access to millions of public domain objects to view and download. Use Picryl to search for specific items such as Abraham Lincoln or Abraham Lincoln's papers. Sort information to view just text, images, or collections. Additional filters allow you to narrow down the time frame to include or select from suggested tags. Picryl also offers over 2,000 collections featuring various topics that range from lighthouses to glassblowing. After choosing an item, use the download link to save it to your device and access information to credit the source. Registration isn't required; however, it provides access to source URL information and allows you to create collections from resources found on Picryl.

Routines are a key part of classroom management. As educators, we create routines for many things: asking to leave the room, handing out supplies, and transitioning to a new task, to name a few. EduProtocols are routines you apply to your lesson content, streamlining the instructional process and allowing you and your students to focus on the content. Join us to see how EduProtocols can help provide a framework for your lessons. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand the purpose of EduProtocols; 2. Explore a collection of EduProtocol routines; and 3. Plan for the use of EduProtocols in the classroom. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Sign up with College Essay Builder to receive free tools that develop the skills to write powerful college essays. Tools include StoryBuilder and a series of story-writing courses. Begin using StoryBuilder by selecting the "Build" link. Then, StoryBuilder guides you through five steps: finding stories based on personal experiences, focusing on moments of growth and change, telling stories out loud to discover memories and emotions, mapping the story from beginning to end, and focusing on defining and incorporating specific details instead of generic details. Finally, download completed writing projects as a PDF onto your device.
In the Classroom
Share the College Essay Builder with students as they prepare to write college admission applications and use it as a guide for writing personal essays for any topic. Engage students in the writing process by creating a set of Google Slides, reviewed here, to use as a template. Create a slide for each of the five steps used in the story-telling process for students to organize and refine their thoughts. When complete, ask students to use a website creation tool such as about.me, reviewed here, to share their final essay and additional information with college admission personnel.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Perusall is a social learning platform that integrates e-reading, annotations, and collaboration as part of the learning process. After completing the account registration, educators begin creating a course by assigning content. In order to create a course, your school must be on the list of included institutions. Otherwise, you need to contact Perusall support to finish setting up a course. Use your documents or upload Open Educational Resources (OER) found on the web. Next, add instructions or annotations to guide students as they begin the assignment. As students access the reading assignment, they engage with the content and other students by adding comments, inserting questions, highlighting text, and more. User comments appear within a chat stream that encourages ongoing discussions of the material. Options such as dark mode, resizing text, and others within Perusall provide accommodations for the various needs of learners.
In the Classroom
Find many options for OER materials at the TeachersFirst Open Educational Resources Special Topics Page, found here. Engage students by using Perusall as part of remote learning lessons, blended learning, or flipped lessons. Perusall is an excellent tool to use as an introduction to new learning materials; ask students to read and respond to a text, then use student responses to guide your learning activities. Extend learning by responding to student comments with links to additional support materials such as videos, online articles, or infographics. As an enhanced learning activity, ask students to select a portion of the material shared in Perusall to begin an extended research project. Ask students to share their learning using one of the many free presentation tools on the TeachersFirst Edge.
