The background section covers the history of poetry, from epic poems of the ancient Greeks to modern free verse, addressing complex themes. The activities sections provide suggestions for poetry books and activities. Further down the page, the extensions share resources and ideas for students to create and share poems. Information includes correlation to ISTE and AASL standards.

Certify'em is an add-on to Google Forms that automatically generates personalized certificates. Follow the instructions to install and authorize the add-on before using it. After installation, personalize Certify'em within any form to create a certificate upon completion of a minimum score. Free accounts allow members to make their templates or choose from those shared on the site. Your Certify'em account also maintains a record of all exam attempts.
In the Classroom
Certify'em is an excellent addition to every Google Forms members' toolbox. Create and share certificates with students for successful completion of quizzes and tests. Use Certify'em as a means for differentiating instruction by allowing students to take a pre-assessment test before starting a new unit. If they obtain a certificate, offer an alternative extended learning activity. Unsplash, the amazing site for finding free, high-quality images, has curated several collections of photos for use in educational settings. Topics include health, nature, politics and current events, and much more. Browse through any collection to find and download images. Although attribution isn't required, it is encouraged. Include the provided attribution text when using images for any project. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to save images and create and share collections.

Use images from Unsplash as creative writing prompts. Have students create a multimedia presentation using Presentious, reviewed here. This site allows you to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced) and then narrate it as a news report. EZVid is a video screencasting tool that captures everything that appears on your Windows computer screen. Once recorded, you can edit videos, add voice, add text, draw directly on the screen image, or control playback speed. Be sure to watch the video tutorial for all features. Upload finished videos directly to YouTube. Once uploaded, share using social networking links. At the time of this review, this tool was not compatible with a MAC. The website does offer some suggestions to MAC users (such as using Bootcamp). If your school blocks YouTube, you will not be able to use this site while at school.

MSN Kids features content and search features geared toward elementary and middle-school aged kids. In addition to news stories around the world of interest to kids, the site also includes crafts and videos that appeal to students. Use the links to different categories including animals, science and tech, and more to narrow down features. One very nice feature for classrooms is that this site does not include any advertising or sponsored content.

Set the home page on classroom computers to MSN Kids for students to explore and learn about current events around the world. Have students choose an article and use it as a basis for a research project. Challenge students to create an infographic using Canva, reviewed here, to share information learned from the site. WikiWand is a browser add-on to enhance the look and use of Wikipedia. Follow links to add the extension to Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. Once installed, WikiWand adds an easy to use table of contents to the side of the screen, easier to read typography and a handy preview-on-hover feature. Personalize your screen by changing fonts and size of fonts.

Install WikiWand on classroom computers to improve student viewing of Wikipedia. Share on your interactive whiteboard to demonstrate and view features for student use. If you do recommend Wikipedia as a source for research, be sure to have the discussion about its unknown authorship and usefulness as a general information tool but not as a "scholarly" resource. As a challenge to your better writers, consider asking them to write entries that you can submit to this encyclopedia on classroom topics in simpler English. They will have to analyze their own language and writing style with far greater scrutiny than ever before. Diffit is a tool that helps teachers differentiate lessons using any text, article, or web page. To use Diffit, you need to create a free account. Then, select one of three options: Literally Anything, An Article (or URL), or Any Text or Excerpt. Then, choose the approximate reading level you want for the differentiated materials. After entering all the necessary information, click Generate Output. Diffit will produce an adaptive reading passage, a summary, key vocabulary words, multiple-choice and short-answer questions, and open-ended prompts. All of the generated content can be edited or added to. Use the dropdown box to adjust the reading level or language. Share the materials with students by copying them into a document, printing, or exporting them to Google Docs/Forms.

Use Diffit to quickly adapt and differentiate text or content by reading level and language needs. Use Diffit to translate text into the native language of multilingual learners and generate comprehension questions. Differentiate text for special needs students or gifted students based on their ability. Engage students in the learning process by copying the questions generated by Diffit into an interactive quiz format resource such as Blooket, reviewed here. Extend learning by asking students to respond to the open-ended questions by sharing a video response using Flip, reviewed here. Continue to build upon your students' ideas throughout the week using Google Jamboard, reviewed here, to create a template for students to share digital stickers with information. For example, the fourth tip recommends that all online users carefully craft their message. Create a Jamboard divided into columns labeled grammar, clarity, and audience. When crafting online content, ask students to share specific ways to keep these topics in mind. As an extension activity, ask students to write a short article sharing tips and information on becoming responsible digital citizens. Use a simple web-publishing tool like Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Do you want to start a classroom blog but don't know how to start? This series of articles provides all the information you need from getting started through promoting your blog. Information on this site begins with the most basic information including choosing the appearance of your blog and moves on to cover using and customizing your site. All information in these articles pertains to using WordPress as your platform; however, the tips and information apply to anyone wanting to create a classroom blog.
In the Classroom
Check out TeachersFirst Blog Basics for the Classroom for additional information on creating a blog for your classroom. Use this information as a starting point for creating blogs for students. Replace written reports or oral presentations by requiring students to create blog posts sharing information learned in class. Use a tool like Edublog, reviewed here. Edublog offers tools for creating class and individual blogs, but not for embedding videos or HTML links. UseTelegra.ph, reviewed here, for older students. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. In this session, you will learn to plan and design HyperDoc lessons using ready-made templates and frameworks. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Learn about creating and using HyperDocs; 2. Explore sample HyperDocs and templates; and 3. Plan for the use of HyperDocs in the classroom.
