Find many ready to go, subject specific, Common Core aligned projects free for your use. Developed by the Buck Institute for Education, who are THE experts for project based learning, the PBLU projects are designed to save you time in the project based learning process. However, each project is flexible enough to customize it to your needs. Sign up for their newsletter to stay updated about new project development. You can even suggest a project for them to create through the Community Wish List.
In the Classroom
There are a variety of projects presented at different grade levels. Don't hesitate to look at one that seems beyond or below your grade level. They are easily adaptable. For instance, the one by Biz World created for third through fifth grade students to experience entrepreneurship can easily be adapted to a product that high school students might be interested in such as earrings, designing a class ring, or a video explaining how to conquer levels in a video game.

Graphing Stories is a math activity that teaches how to transition from one-variable representations to two-variable representations (number lines to coordinate planes). Use the attached Teacher Guide to plan instruction using the included videos and whiteboard for sketching. The helpful "Teacher Moves" provides tips for guiding instruction within each of the videos. Create a free Desmos account to make a class code to use the activity with students. Desmos recommends a different class code for each class period.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the many free activities provided by Desmos by creating your account and saving favorites to collections. Use the Graphing Stories as a self-paced activity for students to complete in place of other homework assignments or as a collaborative activity with peers. Be sure to ask students to create their representations to share in the class gallery. For more specific information on using Desmos tools, search for tutorials on YouTube. Ask students to include reflections about their learning process in a digital portfolio created with Pathbrite, reviewed here. Include screenshots of the learning process as slides within the portfolio or create a screencast tutorial using Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, and embed it within the portfolio. Extend student learning by asking students who work ahead to create step-by-step instructions via explainer videos for their peers using FlexClip, reviewed here.

Just as the title states, this simple-looking site contains 1,000 math problems for students in middle and high school. Choose from the categories (left sidebar) of number, algebra, shape and space, and statistics to find problems. Choose to view all at once. After choosing the year (year 7 is like 6th grade), find a list of available problems along with an objectives reference and a short description. Each problem can be viewed online or downloaded as a word document. Word documents contain additional notes and problem solutions. Please note this site was created in the United Kingdom, so you may notice some slight spelling or terminology differences if you are accustomed to American English.
In the Classroom
Use 1000 Math Problems for homework, in-class practice, or anytime throughout the school year. Problems are not typical "rote" problems and are ideal for extension activities, as well. Don't let the years bother you, use these calendars as you please and at any time. Click on your choice of calendar then on a number to view the problem of the day. Problem formats include video questions, problem solving, and games. Note: The age levels terminology for lessons is from the UK, so you may need to "translate" for U.S. curriculum topics and spelling.

How are rainbows formed? Why do they only occur when the sun is behind the observer? If the sun is low on the horizon, at what angle in the sky should we expect to see a rainbow? This lab helps to answer these and other questions by examining a mathematical model of light passing through a water droplet. Follow each step of the lab - how light travels, reflection, refraction, exploration, and analysis - to solve the questions. Each segment offers some information about the topic and questions to explore or experiments. The focus of each of the activities is the Mathematical equations and principals involved in creating rainbows.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector when introducing this topic. Then assign different sections to students to explore then present to the rest of the class. Have students create multimedia presentations based on information learned through explorations in the site. Although it is created specifically for New York Regents exam preparation, content is applicable to any math curriculum. Choose from content sorted by textbook, class, or review materials. Choices for downloading materials include PDF, DOC, and TST formats. Other materials included on the site are Regents books, worksheet generators, and Regents archives. This site is a must-see for New York teachers and worth a visit for all math teachers!

This intro page explains the project and gives the link to the actual YouTube channel. Math and science surround us in our everyday life. STEMbite opens your eyes to infinite possibilities. The videos engage you through a short explanation and motivate you to learn more. Examples of videos include math at the pharmacy, washing machine physics, chemistry in your kitchen, probability challenge, the polarization of light, and more! Subscribe to the STEMbite YouTube channel to make your mind hungry to learn about the application of math and science in our everyday life. STEMbite will change your point of view on math and science. If your district blocks YouTube, then STEMbite may not be viewable for students at school.

Use STEMbite videos as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector or interactive whiteboard. Discuss the videos in STEMbite and informally assess the prior knowledge as you start a lesson or unit of study. STEMbite is a great find for gifted students (logic, unusual topics, in-depth investigation, and more). Be sure to include this site on your class web page or blog for students to access both in and outside of class. Have your students create their own first-person videos on a math or science topic. Create an online or printed comic similar to a STEMbite video on a science or math concept, First have students create a rough draft of their comic using Printable Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here. Calkoo is a great free tool to replace expensive graphing calculators that many students may not have. Calkoo works well on computers, mobile devices, and interactive whiteboards. Use this site during a unit on careers, economics, or financial literacy. Include it as part of a measurement unit. Share during Family and Consumer Science units to explore the cost of living and have students put together a mythical "budget" for living in their chosen career. Have students send you on a vacation and include calculations for the currency converter, fuel cost calculator, sales tax for souvenirs, and more! This is a great site to support many experiments in science. Calculate acceleration, velocity, and time, or use the mathematics category to complete problems. Use this tool in social studies class for quickly calculating years or months from important timelines or when figuring out geographical distances. In English or L.A. classes, quickly figure out the life span of authors or how long ago a story took place. In health or science classes, use the BMI calculator or get other accurate measurements. Visit Calkoo and select a calculator to meet your needs! Include this site on your class web page for students and parents to access as a reference. Share portions of the site as needed on your interactive whiteboard. Use the Problem Solver applications to demonstrate and share any problems you want to work out as a class. Have students use the Problem Solver and then write a journal entry describing the steps used in solving the problem. Assign different portions of the Math History section of the site to students to use when learning math history or as a backdrop to put concepts into context. In your classroom, offer Word GameTime as a center. Have students keep a log of the games they successfully complete to earn classroom incentives. Find appropriate interactives by grade level or by subject area. Include this link on your class web page as a place for reinforcement or even enrichment.

View these detailed set of videos that describe key components of the Common Core State Standards in math. At the time of this review, only math standards were included. However, English Language Arts are supposed to be added soon. Find videos by grade level for immediate viewing or download for later. Videos focus on standards and include examples though the intention is to clarify the meaning but not how to teach the standard. Many of the videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Use as a professional resource to think about how to use the Common Core State Standards in your classroom.
