ESL Discussions is a resource of over 600 discussion questions. They could be used in ESL/ELL lessons, speaking practice, debate clubs, and as needed for any speaking activities. Categorized alphabetically, topics include everyday themes such as donuts as well as more controversial topics such as marijuana. Teachers working with K-12 students will want to select the questions rather than sending students to the site since there are also some very sensitive topics. Choose a topic to view two sets of questions to spark conversations: one for student A and another for student B. Choose the link to print questions in either Word or PDF. Although this site has a lot of advertisements, there are some very interesting topics to discuss/share.

Bookmark this site to use anytime you want to develop and promote discussion skills in your classroom. After students have completed their discussion questions, have them present their findings to the class then create a quick poll using using Poll Everywhere, reviewed here. Share with ESL/ELL and Special Education teachers as a resource for promoting discussion and speaking skills with their students. Use this site for teacher-selected topics in debate club, speech class, and more. Some of the topics could even make good blog prompts.

Google Sites is an easy tool you can use to create a variety of websites. This includes portfolios, which are a great way for students (and teachers!) to share what they've learned and/or created. In this session, we will explore the basics of using Google Sites to set up a portfolio and share tips and tricks for making your content stand out. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Identify the basic page types and features available in Google Sites; 2. Become familiar with strategies for creating and organizing a portfolio site; and 3. Brainstorm ways to use portfolios in the classroom. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Have you ever told anyone, "Let me Google that for you?" That is what LMGTFY is all about! This site allows you to demonstrate how to Google (and much more) terms, then send a link with a step by step demonstration on how to complete the search. LMGTFY has grown beyond Google and now offers users the ability to select from several popular search engines including Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and DuckDuckGo. The drop-down box provides choices to search the web, images, video, and more. After making selections and entering a search term, click to get the link or choose preview to view the information.
In the Classroom
Use LMGTFY to teach students how to use search engines effectively. Create links demonstrating searches using different terms and different search engines and have students analyze the results. When students create multimedia presentations of research projects, ask them to include a screen share using Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, to show their search method using LMGTFY. Spelling Bees allows up to four players to practice spelling by building a beehive with correctly spelled words. Begin by using the site-generated user name or typing your own; then join a game or create your own. Use private game settings to create a private game with a password so only known users will join. When a game is full, play begins. Listen to each word and click or type letters to spell the word. After spelling the word correctly, the game continues until time runs out. At the end of the game, view your position in the finished game along with percentage correct and correct spelling for any missed words.

Use Spelling Bee as an entertaining way to practice spelling on your interactive whiteboard or classroom computers. Finish words on coconuts before the coconuts get to the ground! A rocket holds vowels missing from one of four coconut words that are falling down the screen. Move the rocket with the left and right arrows so the rocket is under the correct coconut to finish spelling the word. Three levels of difficulty and three coconut falling speeds make this game adaptable for a variety of learning levels. When the activity finishes, the coconut falling rate appears as well as the accuracy rate. A graph on the following page shows the number of hits and misses in all the games. Printing the graph for future reference and a sense of accomplishment is easy! Try to advance to the next level with each new game.

In the Classroom
This would be great for ESL/ELL learners; have them type a short sentence and listen to the playback to verify that the sentence is correct. It would also be a great practice for beginning readers. Use your interactive whiteboard and have the class tell a very brief story or say a sentence. After typing the sentence into the program, user a pointer for each word as the synthesizer reads it, or have students take turns pointing out the words. Share tonight's homework on your class web page as a link to an audio reminder simply by typing or pasting in the assignment and copying the link to place it on your web page.Comments
